In a swift debunking of viral misinformation, fact-checkers have determined that footage purportedly showing a Hezbollah attack on Israeli military headquarters actually depicts a residential fire in Manhattan, New York City.

The video, which spread rapidly across social media platforms in recent days, was shared by Facebook user Nazim Khan Tirwadiya on April 15 with claims that it showed an ongoing attack by the Lebanon-based militant group on Israeli military facilities, complete with assertions of multiple casualties and trapped soldiers.

Vishvas News, which conducted the investigation, employed reverse image search techniques to trace the origin of the footage. Their analysis revealed that the video originated from Manhattan, where a six-story residential building in Midtown experienced a major fire. The authentic footage was published on YouTube by a channel called ‘FDNY Response Videos’ on April 12, three days before the misleading posts began circulating.

Further corroborating evidence came from local New York media outlet ABC7NY, which reported on the Manhattan apartment fire that broke out around 6 a.m. on April 12. According to their coverage, while two firefighters sustained minor injuries during the emergency response, no civilian casualties were reported.

Israeli fact-checker Uria Bar Mer, contacted during the investigation, confirmed that no attack on Israeli military headquarters had occurred, reinforcing the conclusion that the viral claims were fabricated.

The circulation of such misinformation comes at a particularly sensitive time in Middle Eastern geopolitics. Recent media reports indicate that post-ceasefire negotiations between Iran and the United States in Pakistan have reached an impasse, prompting Pakistani officials to engage with Iranian counterparts in hopes of facilitating renewed dialogue. Simultaneously, U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that Israel and Lebanon are prepared for peace talks that could potentially be hosted on American soil.

The false narrative around the video appears designed to inflame tensions in an already volatile region, potentially undermining diplomatic efforts. This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of misinformation surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and broader Middle Eastern affairs, where decontextualized or misrepresented media can rapidly gain traction online.

The Facebook account responsible for spreading the false claim has over 5,000 followers and belongs to an individual who identifies as a resident of Haryana, India, according to Vishvas News’ investigation.

This case exemplifies the importance of media literacy and fact-checking in the digital age, where viral content can rapidly spread unchecked across borders and language barriers. It also demonstrates the methodology employed by fact-checking organizations, which typically includes reverse image searches, consultation with regional experts, and cross-referencing with established media sources.

Such misinformation related to conflict zones can have serious real-world implications, potentially stoking fears and contributing to international tensions. The incident serves as a reminder for social media users to verify information before sharing, especially content related to ongoing conflicts or geopolitical situations.
