A viral video purporting to show a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) official assaulting a prayer leader in Lahore has been debunked as false by fact-checkers. The footage, which has garnered significant attention across multiple social media platforms, actually depicts an incident that occurred in India earlier this year.

The 27-second video began circulating widely on May 2 when an account on X (formerly Twitter) shared it with claims that PTI supporters were “fighting inside mosques and physically assaulting the imam because of Imran Khan.” Text overlaid on the footage specifically alleged that a local PTI official had attacked an imam in Lahore who had refused to offer prayers for the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned.

The post quickly gained traction, accumulating 51,000 views, 1,200 likes, and 640 reposts on X alone. The same misleading narrative spread to other platforms including Instagram, Facebook, and Threads, contributing to a growing wave of misinformation.

Geo Fact Check’s investigation revealed the true origin of the video through reverse image searches of key frames. The footage was initially uploaded on February 24 and documented an incident in Uttar Pradesh, India—not Pakistan as claimed.

The Pune Times Mirror, an Indian publication, reported that the altercation stemmed from a dispute during the distribution of “laddoos” (traditional Indian sweets) following a Quran completion ceremony. What began as a disagreement escalated into physical violence between two groups of attendees, with several men seen grappling and throwing punches inside the mosque.

Zee News, another Indian media outlet, corroborated this account in their February 25 coverage of the same incident, further confirming that the video had no connection to Pakistani politics or PTI.

The misrepresentation of this video comes amid heightened political tensions in Pakistan. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023 on multiple charges, which his supporters claim are politically motivated. His party, PTI, continues to advocate for his release, organizing protests and rallies across the country.

This incident highlights the growing challenge of cross-border misinformation in South Asia, where political content is frequently manipulated and repurposed to serve different narratives. Social media platforms have become fertile ground for such misleading content, particularly during periods of political unrest.

The speed with which the falsely contextualized video spread across multiple platforms underscores the challenges fact-checkers face in the region. By the time verification occurs, misleading content often reaches hundreds of thousands of viewers, potentially influencing public opinion before corrections can be widely disseminated.

Media literacy experts emphasize the importance of scrutinizing viral content, particularly videos showing violent incidents that are accompanied by politically charged claims. Checking multiple reliable sources and being wary of content that seems designed to inflame political tensions are recommended practices for social media users.

The fact-checking organization has urged social media users to verify information before sharing and to report misrepresented content to help curb the spread of misinformation that can exacerbate political and religious tensions in the region.
