False Claims Circulate About Political Motive in 2019 West Bengal Family Murder Case
As West Bengal prepares for crucial State Assembly elections scheduled for April 23 and 29, misleading social media posts have resurfaced about a 2019 triple murder case, falsely attributing political motives to what authorities determined was a financial dispute.
The posts, widely shared on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), claim that Bandhu Prakash Pal, alleged to be an RSS activist, was murdered along with his wife and young son due to his opposition to “infiltration of illegal Bangladeshis” in the state. The posts specifically implicate Trinamool Congress MLA Abdur Razzak in the killings.
“Hindus of West Bengal, please do not forget the family of RSS worker Shri Bandhu Prakash Pal, his wife, Beauty Pal, and their six-year-old son, Anjan Pal,” read one viral post, noting that Mrs. Pal was seven months pregnant at the time of the murders. The post further claimed the TMC legislator targeted the family because Bandhu Prakash opposed Bangladeshi infiltration while Razzak allegedly helped migrants obtain documentation.
However, police investigations and court proceedings tell a different story.
The tragic incident occurred on October 8, 2019, when the family of three was found murdered in Murshidabad district. Following investigation, authorities arrested Utpal Behera for the crime. According to Superintendent of Police Mukesh Kumar, as reported by The Hindu on October 16, 2019, the motive was a financial dispute.
Behera had invested money in a savings scheme operated by Pal. When Pal refused to provide a receipt for part of Behera’s payment, tensions escalated, eventually leading to the brutal killings.
Further substantiating the non-political nature of the crime, The Telegraph reported on August 25, 2023, that a Murshidabad district court sentenced Behera to death for the murders. The court proceedings revealed that Bandhu Prakash ran an insurance agency in his wife’s name. Behera, a policy holder who regularly paid premiums, discovered his money hadn’t been deposited with the insurance company, prompting a violent outburst during which he killed the family with sharp-edged weapons.
Contrary to claims about Pal’s political affiliations, his mother Maya Pal told The Indian Express in October 2019: “He was never associated with the BJP or Trinamool Congress. He was never with RSS. These are lies being spread.” This testimony was corroborated by Pal’s neighbor and local BJP district committee leader Manoj Sarkar, who confirmed that Bandhu never discussed politics and maintained no political affiliations.
Police explicitly ruled out political motives in their official statements, emphasizing it was “a case of personal enmity and has nothing to do with politics.”
The recirculation of these false claims comes at a politically sensitive time in West Bengal, where electoral competition between the ruling TMC and opposition BJP has intensified. West Bengal has historically seen charged political atmospheres during election periods, with both parties trading accusations of violence and intimidation.
While Abdur Razzak is indeed a TMC MLA from Jalangi constituency, no credible reports have linked him to the murders. The court’s conviction of Behera and the death sentence handed down confirms the financial dispute as the sole motive behind the crime.
The spreading of such misinformation highlights the concerning trend of exploiting tragic incidents for political narratives, particularly ahead of elections. Fact-checkers continue to emphasize the importance of verifying information before sharing, especially in politically sensitive regions during election seasons.
