In a case of digital misinformation, a video purporting to show violence against Muslim homes following BJP’s victory in West Bengal elections has been exposed as false. The footage, which has been circulating widely on social media platforms, actually depicts an eviction drive that took place in Assam’s Goalpara district in November 2025.

The misleading posts on Facebook claimed to show “the condition of Muslims in West Bengal after the BJP’s victory” on May 5, 2026. The video shows houses being demolished while distressed residents look on, including an elderly man weeping at the destruction of what appears to be his home.

Fact-checking organization NewsMeter investigated the footage and determined the narrative attached to the video was fabricated. Through reverse image search techniques, they traced the original video to Instagram pages “Just Goalpara Things” and “The Vaani,” which had posted the content on November 9, 2025—months before the alleged incident in West Bengal.

According to these sources, the footage actually documents a government-sanctioned eviction operation in Assam’s Dahikata Reserved Forest area in Goalpara district. This anti-encroachment drive, the second phase of the state’s efforts to clear forest land, displaced approximately 588 families from 1,143 bighas (roughly 380 acres) of land.

The operation was conducted by the district administration and Forest Department officials, who deployed around 20 bulldozers to demolish structures allegedly built illegally on protected forest land. Local news outlet ETV Bharat Assam reported that the eviction was carried out peacefully, though under the watchful eyes of hundreds of security personnel stationed throughout the area.

The Dahikata Reserved Forest clearance was part of the Assam government’s ongoing efforts to remove unauthorized settlements from protected environmental zones. The eviction took place specifically in the Matia Revenue Circle of Goalpara district.

This incident highlights the growing challenge of misinformation surrounding political events in India. The BJP’s reported victory over Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal Assembly Elections—winning 207 seats according to the false narrative—created a volatile information environment where such misleading content could easily spread.

The deliberate mischaracterization of the Assam eviction video as evidence of communal violence follows a pattern seen in previous Indian election cycles, where tensions between religious communities are exploited through manipulated media.

Digital literacy experts point to this case as an example of how archival footage can be repurposed to create false narratives during politically sensitive periods. The emotional content of the video—showing the destruction of homes and the distress of affected residents—makes it particularly effective for manufacturing outrage when stripped of its original context.

Social media platforms continue to struggle with the rapid spread of such misinformation, especially when content crosses language barriers or is shared across multiple platforms, making verification more challenging for average users.

This incident serves as a reminder for media consumers to approach viral videos with skepticism, particularly those making dramatic claims about political or communal violence without clear sourcing or verification from established news organizations.
