Viral Video of Mother’s Abandonment Revealed as Staged Content

A viral video that appeared to show a heartbreaking scene of a daughter abandoning her elderly mother at an old-age home has been revealed as staged content, despite triggering an outpouring of emotional reactions across social media platforms.

In the widely shared clip, a woman is confronted about leaving her elderly mother behind, to which she coldly responds, “There is no space in my house for her.” When the person recording asks the visibly distressed elderly woman if she chose to come to the facility voluntarily, she tearfully indicates she did not.

The video quickly gained traction after being shared on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption: “She left her poor old mother in an old-age home. The mother started crying. She failed as a daughter.” The emotional content struck a nerve with viewers, generating hundreds of comments condemning the younger woman’s apparent callousness.

Several mainstream news organizations, including NDTV and InKhabar, reported on the video as if it depicted a real incident, further amplifying its reach and perceived authenticity.

However, an investigation by India Today’s Fact Check team has conclusively determined that the video was staged. Through reverse image searches of key frames from the viral clip, researchers traced the content to its original source: an Instagram account belonging to Ashish Vats, a content creator based in Haryana.

The original video was posted on December 23, 2023, not 2025 as incorrectly stated in some reports. Further examination revealed that Vats had produced multiple videos featuring the same two women wearing identical clothing, clearly indicating they were part of a series of scripted scenarios.

In one related clip from the same series, the elderly woman in a blue salwar kameez laments that sometimes her son tries to abandon her at an old-age home, while at other times her daughter does the same. Another video shows a confrontation where the younger woman coldly states she doesn’t believe her mother did her any favors by raising her.

Additional investigation into Vats’ social media presence confirmed that he regularly creates and shares dramatized content of this nature. His Instagram biography explicitly identifies him as a content creator. The fact-checking team also discovered similar staged videos on his YouTube channel dating back to November 2022, featuring the same elderly actress.

This incident highlights the growing challenge of distinguishing between authentic content and staged scenarios on social media platforms. Emotionally charged videos often spread rapidly without verification, sometimes even making their way into mainstream news coverage.

The situation also reflects broader societal concerns about elder care and familial responsibility in contemporary society. While this particular incident was fabricated, the strong public reaction it generated points to genuine anxieties about elder abandonment and the treatment of aging parents – issues that remain significant social concerns across India and globally.

As digital media consumption continues to increase, this case serves as a reminder of the importance of critical media literacy and the need for thorough fact-checking before accepting emotionally provocative content at face value, especially when it appears to document disturbing social behavior.
