In a significant example of digital misinformation, a video circulating on social media platforms since May 3 has falsely claimed to show U.S. President Donald Trump handing the keys to the White House to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a recent meeting. Fact-checking efforts have revealed that the footage actually dates back to September 15, 2020.
The misleading video gained substantial traction online, with one post on X (formerly Twitter) accumulating over 660,000 views. The post carried the provocative caption: “Trump handing Netanyahu the keys to the White House will be remembered as one of the most embarrassing moments in American history.” Several other accounts shared the same clip with similar framing, generating hundreds of thousands of additional views.
Even media outlets participated in spreading the misinformation. RT India, a local media platform, shared the video with the caption: “Trump Gives Netanyahu White House Gold Key. The president called it a ‘key to our country’,” garnering over 5,000 views.
The timing of the viral video coincided with Trump’s April 16 announcement on Truth Social stating he would invite Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to the White House for what he described as the “first meaningful talks” between the two countries since 1983. This announcement likely contributed to confusion about the video’s timeline.
Comprehensive fact-checking efforts found no evidence of a recent White House visit by Netanyahu. Instead, a reverse image search traced the footage to a YouTube video published on Trump’s official account on September 15, 2020, titled: “President Trump presents Prime Minister Netanyahu with the ‘Key to the White House’.” The viral clip was extracted from this longer video, specifically from the 0:04 to 0:43 timestamp.
In the original 2020 footage, Trump can be heard saying to Netanyahu: “This was a special token of affection given by myself and the First Lady to the prime minister and the first lady of Israel, and it’s a key. We call it a key to the White House, and it’s a key to our country and to our hearts.” Trump added that Netanyahu had “been an amazing leader for a long period of time,” noting they had just left meetings with UAE and Bahrain representatives.
Netanyahu responded by thanking Trump, saying: “You have the key to the hearts of the people of Israel because of all the great things you’ve done for the Jewish state and the Jewish people.”
The ceremonial key presentation occurred during a significant diplomatic moment. Multiple news organizations, including The Hill, Bloomberg News, and Kenyan News Today, covered the exchange on their YouTube channels at the time. Additionally, a Chinese media outlet, CGTN, reported on the meeting in a September 16, 2020 article.
This incident highlights the persistent challenge of contextual misinformation on social media platforms, where genuine content can be repurposed and presented in a misleading timeframe to create false narratives or inflame political tensions. The rapid spread of the video across multiple accounts demonstrates how quickly such misinformation can proliferate, particularly regarding high-profile political figures and sensitive geopolitical relationships.
The fact-check was originally conducted by iVerify Pakistan, a project collaboration between CEJ-IBA and the United Nations Development Programme, which officially labeled the claim as “misleading” based on the chronological misrepresentation of the footage.
