In the aftermath of Sunday’s deadly terror attack at Australia’s Bondi Beach, a sophisticated deepfake video falsely depicting Indian politician Assaduddin Owaisi claiming personal acquaintance with the gunmen has been circulating widely on social media platforms.
The attack, which claimed at least 15 lives during what began as a Jewish festival, was allegedly carried out by father-son duo Sajid and Naveed Akram. Initial reports and social media posts quickly labeled the attackers as being of Pakistani origin, but official sources have since contradicted this information.
According to a Reuters report, the Philippines Bureau of Immigration confirmed on December 16 that both gunmen had recently traveled to the country, with Sajid Akram carrying an Indian passport. Indian government officials, quoted by The Hindu, further clarified that Sajid was from Hyderabad and had last visited India in 2022.
Amid this developing story, a manipulated video began circulating online, purportedly showing All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Hyderabad Member of Parliament Assaduddin Owaisi making statements about a personal connection to the attackers. The deceptively edited clip begins with FirstPost journalist Palki Sharma introducing what she calls Owaisi’s “exclusive statement” on the attack.
The video then cuts to Owaisi apparently stating that while Sajid Akram was “a decent man,” his son Naveed suffered from mental illness. The fabricated clip also shows Owaisi expressing disbelief that Sajid would commit such a violent act.
An investigation by India Today Fact Check has definitively established that the video is a deepfake—an increasingly sophisticated form of digital manipulation that uses artificial intelligence to create convincing but entirely fabricated content.
Reverse image searches of frames from the video revealed that the footage of Sharma was taken from a November 25 broadcast about Donald Trump and Taiwan—predating the Bondi Beach attack. In the authentic coverage of the terror attack, Sharma appears wearing completely different attire.
Similarly, the footage appearing to show Owaisi was traced back to an October 11 interview with ANI, where the politician discussed an incident involving a shoe being thrown at India’s Chief Justice. The original video had nothing to do with the Australian terror attack.
To confirm these findings, India Today Fact Check contacted Owaisi directly. The Hyderabad MP unequivocally dismissed the viral video as “all false” and emphasized, “I have always condemned terrorism.”
The emergence of this sophisticated deepfake highlights growing concerns about the misuse of AI technology to spread misinformation during crisis events. As deepfake technology becomes increasingly accessible and realistic, it presents serious challenges for news consumers attempting to distinguish between authentic and fabricated content.
This incident also underscores the potential for deepfakes to inflame tensions during sensitive situations like terrorist attacks, particularly when they target public figures from minority communities. Political analysts note that Owaisi, as a prominent Muslim politician in India, has frequently been the target of misinformation campaigns.
Digital rights experts have been calling for stronger regulatory frameworks and improved detection technologies to combat the spread of deepfakes, particularly those designed to create false associations between public figures and violent extremism.
As investigations into the Bondi Beach attack continue, authorities are urging the public to rely on verified information from official sources and established news outlets rather than unverified content circulating on social media.
