A video falsely claiming to show security forces beating civilians during West Bengal’s recent assembly elections has been debunked as footage from Bangladesh, according to fact-checkers at NewsMeter.

The misleading clip, which began circulating on social media immediately after the final phase of voting on April 29, shows uniformed personnel dispersing crowds with batons. It emerged amid reports of violence and clashes across West Bengal during the polling process, leading many social media users to share it as evidence of alleged voter suppression.

“If elections mean that the public is suppressed with the administration’s batons and those who raise their voices are harassed, then such elections are not democracy but merely a sham,” wrote one Facebook user who shared the video, suggesting it depicted authorities cracking down on democratic expression during the West Bengal polls.

However, detailed analysis by fact-checkers revealed several inconsistencies that debunked this claim. A careful examination of the footage showed army vehicles with distinctive number plates written in Bengali script, featuring an upward-pointing arrow and the number “030616.” This format is consistent with Bangladesh Army vehicle identification and differs significantly from the English-language format used by Indian security forces.

Further investigation uncovered a “Law TV” logo watermarked on the video. Law TV is a regional media outlet based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The original footage was published on the channel’s Facebook page on February 15, with text describing it as showing “the army’s brutal behaviour towards civilians on election day” in Bangladesh.

The timing confirms the video’s true origin, as Bangladesh held its national elections on February 12, more than two months before the West Bengal assembly polls. The Law TV report indicates the footage was released several days after Bangladesh’s polling day.

This incident highlights the growing challenge of misinformation during election periods, when tensions are heightened and voters are particularly vulnerable to misleading content. West Bengal elections have historically been contentious, with allegations of voter intimidation and political violence common from various parties.

Security arrangements for elections in West Bengal typically include the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to supplement local police and ensure peaceful voting. The circulation of false videos attributing foreign incidents to local elections can inflame tensions and undermine trust in the electoral process.

Social media platforms have become primary vectors for such misinformation, with content often spreading rapidly before fact-checkers can verify its authenticity. This pattern of sharing unverified content has become increasingly common during election cycles across India and globally.

Election officials and fact-checking organizations regularly urge voters to verify information from trusted sources during polling periods and to be wary of emotionally charged content that appears without clear attribution or context.

The West Bengal assembly elections, conducted in multiple phases throughout April, were closely watched as a significant test for both the ruling Trinamool Congress and opposition parties in one of India’s most politically vibrant states.
