Bangladesh: Misinformation Spreads Following Hasina Death Sentence

In the wake of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s death sentence, a video purportedly showing an attack on Muhammad Yunus’s deputy press secretary has been widely circulated online, fueling concerns about deteriorating security in Dhaka. However, an investigation has revealed this claim to be false, highlighting the challenge of misinformation during Bangladesh’s ongoing political turmoil.

On November 17, Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia by the International Crimes Tribunal. Currently in exile in India, the former prime minister was found guilty of crimes against humanity for allegedly authorizing lethal force that prosecutors claim resulted in over 1,400 protester deaths. Hasina has strongly denied these accusations, describing the trial as “biased and politically motivated.”

The controversial verdict has intensified political tensions in Bangladesh, creating fertile ground for misinformation. In recent days, a video showing a man being attacked in his vehicle on a Dhaka street has gone viral across social media platforms. Users sharing the footage claimed it showed the deputy press secretary to Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus being assaulted, with many commenters suggesting this was evidence of a rapid breakdown in law and order following Hasina’s sentencing.

Fact-checking efforts, however, have thoroughly debunked this claim. A reverse image search revealed the footage has been circulating since at least September 2025, nearly two months before Hasina’s death sentence was announced. The video was found in longer form on the News Now Bangla platform dated October 15, with another version appearing online as early as September 30.

Visual comparison between the man in the video and both of Yunus’s deputy press secretaries, Apurba Jahangir and Azad Majumdar, confirmed the victim is neither of these officials. Moreover, had such a high-profile attack occurred involving a member of the Chief Advisor’s staff, it would have generated substantial news coverage in Bangladesh’s media landscape. No credible reports of such an incident have emerged.

When contacted directly, Nayem Ali, assistant press secretary to Muhammad Yunus, confirmed no attack had taken place on any member of Yunus’s press team. A Dhaka-based news organization, The Dissent, similarly reported the footage simply showed an ordinary road-rage incident that occurred in the city’s Gulshan area, unrelated to any government officials.

The spread of this misinformation highlights the volatile information environment surrounding Bangladesh’s political transition. Since student-led protests forced Hasina from power in August, the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has struggled to maintain stability while addressing the legacy of Hasina’s 15-year rule.

The International Crimes Tribunal’s death sentence against Hasina marks a dramatic turning point in Bangladesh’s political landscape. Having dominated the country’s politics for over a decade, Hasina now finds herself unable to return to her homeland while facing the most severe penalty possible under Bangladeshi law.

Political analysts have expressed concern that the ongoing proceedings against former government officials, coupled with the spread of misinformation, could further polarize Bangladesh’s already deeply divided society. With tensions running high, distinguishing fact from fiction has become increasingly critical for citizens attempting to understand developments in their nation’s volatile political situation.

As Bangladesh navigates this uncertain transition period, the challenge of combating false information remains paramount for maintaining public trust and preventing further social unrest.
