As anti-government demonstrations continue to sweep across Iran, social media has become flooded with content purporting to show citizens fleeing the unrest. One viral video showing hundreds of people climbing a mountainside has gained significant traction, with accompanying claims that it depicts “thousands of Iranians fleeing Tehran to the mountains, fearing for their very lives.”

However, a thorough fact-check conducted by India Today has revealed that the footage has been misattributed and is entirely unrelated to the current situation in Iran.

The investigation traced the video to Nepal’s Dolpa district, where it captured locals participating in the annual yarsagumba harvest – a phenomenon far removed from political upheaval. Yarsagumba, often referred to as “Himalayan Gold,” is a rare medicinal fungus that grows at elevations between 3,000 and 5,000 meters in the Himalayan region.

Multiple social media accounts confirmed the video’s true origin. An Instagram account called MadeInNepal posted the clip on June 2, 2025, explaining it showed people in the Dolpa region gathering to harvest the valuable fungus. A Facebook page dedicated to the Dolpa region shared the same footage on May 29, 2025, further confirming its Nepalese context.

The original source was identified as TikTok account Nedo Yatri, which specified the footage was captured in the Rup-Patan region of Nepal’s Dolpa district. These multiple verification points conclusively established that the video predates the current Iranian protests and was filmed in an entirely different country.

Yarsagumba harvesting represents a significant economic activity in Nepal. According to the U.S. National Centre for Biotechnology Information, the fungus holds immense value in traditional Chinese medicine and is highly sought after throughout Southeast Asia. The annual harvest draws thousands of locals to high-altitude mountain regions across Nepal, China/Tibet, Bhutan, and India, where they meticulously search for the valuable commodity.

The fungus, scientifically known as Ophiocordyceps sinensis, forms when a parasitic fungus infects and kills ghost moth caterpillars underground. Its rarity and labor-intensive collection process contribute to its extraordinary market value, with prices reaching tens of thousands of dollars per kilogram in international markets.

While the video’s connection to Iran has been debunked, the underlying claim about Iranians fleeing the country does contain elements of truth. According to CNN and various regional news outlets, many Iranian citizens have indeed crossed borders into Turkey and other neighboring nations to escape the intensifying domestic turmoil.

Iran has been experiencing waves of anti-government protests since mid-2022, initially triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody after allegedly violating the country’s strict dress code. The demonstrations have since evolved into broader calls for political reform and greater personal freedoms.

The spread of this misattributed video highlights the challenges of information verification during international crises. As tensions in Iran continue to unfold, social media users are encouraged to verify content before sharing, particularly when emotional appeals – such as calls for prayer and support – accompany visually dramatic footage.

Fact-checking organizations emphasize that misinformation, even when shared with good intentions, can distort public understanding of complex geopolitical situations and potentially undermine legitimate humanitarian concerns about the actual conditions facing Iranian citizens.
