Tensions Erupt as Meat Vendors Face Harassment Near Delhi Temple

A video showing men threatening and vandalizing a fish seller’s shop has sparked outrage on social media after being falsely attributed to West Bengal. An investigation reveals the incident actually occurred in Delhi’s Gokulpuri area on November 27.

The viral footage shows a man aggressively damaging a fish vendor’s stall while warning, “No meat should be visible around.” Social media users shared the clip with misleading captions suggesting it showed “goons” targeting Bengali fish markets and attempting to stop Bengalis from eating fish.

India Today’s fact-checking team traced the origin of the video through reverse image searches, discovering a longer version on Instagram. This extended footage clearly identified the location as Gokulpuri in Delhi, with the neighborhood’s name visible on several walls in the background.

The confrontation appears to have been led by Rahul Pachauri, who shared the video on his Instagram account (@hindu_52_07) on November 28. In his caption, Pachauri claimed the action was taken because meat trading was occurring within 30 meters of a local temple, despite previous warnings from police.

“Hindu youths banded together and warned the meat traders that if they want to do this in future, do it at a distance from the temple,” his post stated. “If someone is found doing business around the temple, legal action will be taken against them.”

A separate video posted by Pachauri shows him asserting that meat vendors must maintain a distance of at least 500 meters from any religious place. The man seen threatening the fish vendor in the viral clip has been identified as Aakash Pandat, who appears standing behind Pachauri in this second video.

When contacted by India Today, Pachauri confirmed the incident occurred between 6 and 7 PM on November 27. He denied specifically targeting Muslim-owned businesses, claiming his only concern was preventing meat shops from operating near a temple. He also stated that he and his companions were briefly detained by police but have since been released.

This incident highlights growing tensions over religious sensitivities in urban areas, where the location of businesses selling meat products near places of worship has become increasingly contentious. While some municipal corporations across India have regulations about meat shops operating near religious sites, the enforcement of such rules has often been controversial.

The episode also underscores the rapid spread of misinformation on social media platforms, where videos can be quickly decontextualized and shared with false geographical or political attributions. The original claims about the incident happening in West Bengal gained traction partly due to the state’s strong cultural association with fish consumption.

Legal experts note that while religious sentiments deserve respect, vigilante enforcement of perceived rules can lead to public disorder and potentially violate vendors’ rights to conduct legitimate business. Police intervention in such situations aims to maintain peace while ensuring all parties follow proper legal channels for addressing grievances.

No credible news reports have emerged about similar incidents targeting meat traders in West Bengal, further confirming that the viral video was shared with misleading claims about its location and context.

The incident serves as a reminder of how quickly misinformation can spread online and how important fact-checking is before sharing potentially inflammatory content on social media platforms.

  4. While I understand the concern about meat trading near religious sites, the reported actions of the individuals in this video seem to go beyond legitimate protest and amount to unlawful harassment and property damage. The authorities must uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of all.

It’s disappointing to see religious or cultural differences being used to justify such aggressive and destructive behavior. Vendors should be able to conduct their business peacefully without fear of intimidation or reprisals.

    • I agree. Enforcing religious norms through violence and property damage is unacceptable in a democratic society. The authorities must ensure the equal protection of all citizens and their economic activities.
