A video falsely portraying a Camarines Sur resident criticizing Representative Arnie Fuentebella has been identified as AI-generated content, highlighting the growing problem of synthetic media in political disputes.
The fabricated video, which accumulated over 861,000 views since being posted on March 31, depicts a young individual accusing Fuentebella of attacking Governor Luis Raymund “LRay” Villafuerte while remaining silent about alleged land-grabbing activities by Siruma Mayor Karen Polinga, described as Fuentebella’s political ally.
Multiple AI detection tools flagged the content as artificially created. Video detection software Hive Moderation identified the footage as 99.9% likely to contain AI-generated content and 99% likely to feature synthetic speech. Further analysis determined the video was 99.7% likely produced using Veo3, a sophisticated AI video generator developed by Google DeepMind. Still images from the video were also identified as AI-created by multiple detection systems, including Sight Engine (97% probability), Truth Scan (87% probability), and Undetectable AI.
The timing of the video appears politically motivated, emerging shortly after Fuentebella raised concerns in Congress about illegal fencing and land-grabbing in Siruma, Camarines Sur. The disputed 1,014-hectare property allegedly involves Wanderlust Land Development Corporation, owned by the Villafuerte family. The Fuentebellas and Villafuertes are long-standing political rivals in the region.
The video was published without any disclaimer about its artificial nature, potentially misleading viewers into believing it represented authentic citizen criticism. Comments on the post echoed the fabricated claims, with one user writing in the local dialect that “Cong Arnie is so shameless” for criticizing others while allegedly failing to address flood control issues.
The underlying land dispute referenced in the AI video is itself a significant local controversy. The contested property allegedly encompasses timberland and portions of the sea, which Representative Leila de Lima has noted are part of the “public domain.” Local residents reportedly hold Certificate of Land Ownership Awards (CLOA) for portions of the land under the Agrarian Reform Program.
Governor Villafuerte has denied allegations of land-grabbing, claiming his family legally purchased a 1941 land title for the property in 2024, which he asserts supersedes the agrarian reform law enacted in 1988. Despite this claim, authorities issued a Work Stoppage Order on February 26, halting the fencing project.
Mayor Polinga has also denied allegations that she is involved in a separate land-grabbing issue in Nalayahan, Siruma. In a February 22 Facebook post, she dismissed these claims as “fake news,” stating she does not own land in that area.
The circulation of this AI-generated video demonstrates how emerging technologies are being weaponized in local political contexts to spread misinformation and potentially influence public opinion. As these tools become more accessible and their outputs more convincing, distinguishing genuine citizen commentary from artificially created content presents a growing challenge for voters, media organizations, and electoral authorities.
This incident adds to mounting concerns about the role of synthetic media in political discourse, particularly in regions where historical rivalries between powerful families shape governance and resource allocation.
