A British dental clinic has been falsely accused in social media posts of exclusively serving migrants while British citizens remain unable to access care. The claims, which went viral on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), have been debunked by both the clinic and health authorities.
The viral video, filmed at The Dental Health Centre in Witham, Essex, was shared on December 18 with inflammatory captions alleging the practice only served “illegal migrants” while “millions of British people” were unable to get dental appointments. One post on X garnered over 340,000 views.
In reality, the clinic maintains a standard NHS contract that serves all eligible patients. A spokesperson for the practice confirmed via email that the clinic does not exclusively treat migrants, though it does provide specific evening appointments on Wednesdays and Thursdays for asylum seekers staying at the nearby former RAF Wethersfield airbase.
“The Dental Health Centre provides NHS dental care under a standard NHS contract,” explained William Guy, Director of Primary Care at NHS Mid and South Essex. “This means it must offer services fairly to anyone who is eligible for NHS treatment and cannot discriminate against patients for any reason. Claims that this service is provided exclusively for migrants from RAF Wethersfield are wholly incorrect.”
Under the terms of NHS dental contracts, practitioners are prohibited from discriminating against patients based on factors such as age, sex, race or cultural background. The clinic confirmed it does accept new NHS patients during regular business hours, with the migrant services occurring outside normal working hours.
The video in question appears to have been filmed on December 17, 2023, showing the clinic’s waiting area, which matches images available on Google Maps.
The controversy emerges against the backdrop of an ongoing dental care crisis in Britain. In February 2023, the UK government acknowledged that access to NHS dentistry had become “increasingly a lottery.” A 2022 survey found that one in four patients who attempted to see an NHS dentist within the previous two years were unable to secure an appointment.
According to Public Health England guidelines from 2021, refugees and asylum seekers are entitled to NHS dental care, just like other UK residents. However, they do not receive any preferential treatment.
“Asylum seekers do not receive preferential treatment on the NHS,” stated a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care. “The NHS always prioritises care in order of clinical need.”
The false claims appear to exploit genuine frustrations with the UK’s dental care system while targeting vulnerable migrants. NHS England has been working to address the nationwide shortage of dental appointments, but progress has been slow, leading to increasing public frustration.
Dental care access has become a significant political issue in the UK, with many practices unable to accept new NHS patients due to funding and staffing constraints. This situation has created fertile ground for misinformation that unfairly blames migrants for systemic healthcare problems.
The Reuters Fact Check team, which investigated these claims, concluded them to be false, confirming that while The Dental Health Centre does provide after-hours care for migrants at RAF Wethersfield, it operates primarily as a standard NHS dental practice open to all eligible patients in accordance with its contractual obligations.

It’s good to see the NHS upholding its commitment to fair access to healthcare. Dental services are essential, and no one should be denied based on their immigration status.
Providing evening appointments for asylum seekers is a thoughtful way to improve access. But it’s important the clinic upholds its obligations to serve all eligible NHS patients equally.
Factual reporting and clarification from authorities is crucial to counter misinformation. Healthcare access should be based on need, not immigration status.
