Trump’s Imagined Connection Between His Uncle and the Unabomber Debunked

In a bizarre detour during a Pennsylvania speech on energy and innovation, President Donald Trump fabricated a connection between his late uncle, MIT professor John Trump, and notorious domestic terrorist Ted Kaczynski, commonly known as the Unabomber.

During Tuesday’s event, Trump paused to “brag just for a second” about his uncle’s intelligence before launching into a completely fictional tale. According to the president, Kaczynski had been one of his uncle’s students at MIT, and he had personally asked his uncle about the future terrorist.

“I said, ‘What kind of a student was he, Uncle John?’ Dr. John Trump. I said, ‘What kind of a student?'” Trump recounted. “And then he said, ‘Seriously, good.’ He said, ‘He’d go around correcting everybody.’ But it didn’t work out too well for him.”

This claim contains multiple impossibilities that render it entirely fictional. Most significantly, John Trump died in 1985, more than a decade before Kaczynski was identified and apprehended as the Unabomber in 1996. Prior to his capture, Kaczynski lived as a recluse in rural Montana, making it highly improbable that Donald Trump would have been inquiring about him in conversations with his uncle before 1985.

Furthermore, basic biographical facts disprove any educational connection between Kaczynski and the elder Trump. Kaczynski never attended MIT, where John Trump taught electrical engineering. The Unabomber’s academic career was instead tied to Harvard University, where he studied mathematics, and later the University of Michigan.

An MIT spokesperson confirmed in a statement: “We have no enrollment record or information that Ted Kaczynski ever attended MIT.” While Harvard has historically allowed some students to cross-register for classes at nearby MIT, there is no evidence Kaczynski ever participated in this program during his Harvard years in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The White House has not responded to requests for comment on the president’s false claims.

This isn’t the first time Trump has embellished details about his uncle’s academic career. During the same speech, he incorrectly stated that John Trump was “the longest-serving professor in the history of MIT,” when in fact he was merely among the longest-serving. The president also mischaracterized his uncle’s educational background, claiming he held degrees “in nuclear, chemical, and math,” when in reality, two were in electrical engineering and one in physics.

What is true is that John Trump did have a distinguished career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The MIT spokesperson acknowledged this fact, noting that John Trump “remains among the longest-serving professors in our history and was a highly valued member of the MIT community throughout his tenure as a researcher, innovator, entrepreneur, teacher, and colleague.”

The fabricated Kaczynski connection adds to a pattern of Trump making dramatic but unsupported claims across various topics. The Unabomber reference is particularly notable for its easy debunking through basic timeline analysis and educational records.

Kaczynski, who died in federal prison in 2023, conducted a nationwide bombing campaign that killed three people and injured 23 others between 1978 and 1995. He was eventually captured after his anti-technology manifesto was published in major newspapers, leading to his identification by his brother.

The false anecdote emerged during what was supposed to be a policy speech on energy and innovation, demonstrating how the president often veers into tangential personal stories during official addresses, regardless of their accuracy.
