Sweden’s foreign ministry has refuted claims circulating online that it dismissed climate activist Greta Thunberg’s allegations of mistreatment during her detention by Israeli authorities.

Thunberg was among 479 individuals detained on October 1 when Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was attempting to deliver aid supplies to Gaza. The Swedish activist, who was deported five days later, subsequently reported that she and other flotilla detainees had experienced torture while in Israeli custody.

While Israel’s foreign ministry has categorically denied any mistreatment of the detainees, false information began spreading on social media regarding Sweden’s position on the matter. A Facebook post from October 20 falsely claimed that Sweden’s foreign ministry had called Thunberg’s allegations “ridiculous and baseless.”

In response to these circulating claims, a spokesperson for Sweden’s foreign affairs ministry clarified in an email that it had never denied Thunberg’s claims nor described them as baseless. The spokesperson emphasized that the ministry takes reports of mistreatment of Swedish citizens with utmost seriousness.

“With regard to the Global Sumud Flotilla, and the detained Swedish citizens, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and her Ministry have emphasized that reports of degrading or abusive treatment of Swedish citizens are taken very seriously,” the spokesperson stated.

The ministry further explained that throughout the detention period, Swedish diplomatic channels repeatedly communicated with Israel about the importance of respecting the detainees’ safety and consular rights. “Sweden, through the Embassy in Tel Aviv and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Stockholm, has repeatedly conveyed to Israel the importance of respecting the safety and consular rights of the Swedish citizens concerned,” the statement added.

No credible media outlets have reported that Sweden’s foreign affairs ministry denied Thunberg’s allegations, and the social media posts making this claim failed to provide any legitimate sources for their assertions.

It is worth noting that Sweden’s Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard did criticize the flotilla initiative on October 1, 2025, pointing out that participants had ignored the Swedish government’s travel advisories warning against travel to Gaza due to security concerns. However, this criticism of the flotilla mission itself should not be confused with any statement regarding the treatment of detainees.

The Global Sumud Flotilla incident has drawn international attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza amid the ongoing conflict. The flotilla’s stated mission was to deliver aid supplies and raise awareness about the conditions faced by Palestinian civilians in the enclave, which has been under blockade and, more recently, subject to intense military operations.

The case highlights the challenges of verifying information in conflict zones and the ease with which misinformation can spread through social media channels. It also underscores the diplomatic tensions that arise when citizens of one country are detained by another during politically sensitive operations.

When contacted by Reuters for comment on the matter, Thunberg did not respond to requests for a statement. The Swedish activist, who rose to global prominence for her climate advocacy, has increasingly spoken out on other humanitarian issues in recent years.

The Reuters Fact Check team has conclusively determined that claims about Sweden’s foreign ministry dismissing Thunberg’s mistreatment allegations are false. The spread of such misinformation underscores the importance of fact-checking and verifying sources, particularly regarding sensitive geopolitical situations.
