False Claims Circulate About Pastor Quiboloy’s UN Appointment

Multiple false claims have been spreading on social media alleging that Filipino religious leader Pastor Apollo Quiboloy has been appointed as a peace envoy by the United Nations to mediate in U.S.-Middle East dialogues. These fabricated reports come amid ongoing tensions between Israel, the United States, and Iran.

The misinformation has gained significant traction on Facebook, with various posts using news-style graphics and ceremonial photos of Quiboloy in doctoral regalia. One particularly viral post from Jay Sonza, a social media personality with a history of spreading misinformation, has already garnered over 1,600 reactions and hundreds of shares.

Several posts feature identical or similar captions stating: “The United Nations (UN) Appoints International Religious Leader Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy as Peace Envoy in U.S.–Middle East Dialogue.” Another variation of the claim, which received approximately 2,800 reactions, goes further by specifying the appointment supposedly took place on April 1, 2026, in New York.

Fact-checking reveals these claims are entirely false. No such appointment has been made by the United Nations, and searches of official UN websites and communications yield no mention of Quiboloy in any diplomatic capacity. As of March 2026, Jean Arnault of France remains the Personal Envoy of UN Secretary-General António Guterres for Middle East conflict resolution efforts.

The photos used in these misleading posts are actually from 2022, showing Quiboloy at a ceremony where the UN-Intergovernmental Organizations (UN-IGO) awarded various recognitions to his Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) organization in Davao City. The images show him receiving honorary doctorate degrees, not UN diplomatic credentials.

Contrary to the portrayal in these false posts, Quiboloy’s current reality is starkly different. The founder of KOJC is presently detained in Pasig City Jail facing human trafficking charges. A close associate of former President Rodrigo Duterte, Quiboloy was placed on the FBI’s most wanted list in 2022 for serious allegations including sex trafficking of children and money laundering.

After evading authorities for months, Quiboloy surrendered in 2024. During his detention, he was briefly hospitalized for pneumonia before returning to jail. His legal team’s recent appeal for house arrest was denied by a Pasig City court for lack of merit.

This isn’t the first time misinformation about Quiboloy has circulated widely on social media platforms. Fact-checking organizations have previously debunked similar false claims about the controversial religious figure.

The spread of such misinformation highlights the ongoing challenge of verifying information on social media, particularly regarding high-profile figures involved in legal proceedings. Many commenters appear to have accepted these claims without verification, with one supporter writing, “Yes, yes. It is the will of God that our pastor will rule all over the world.”

As tensions continue in the Middle East and diplomatic efforts remain critical, accurate information about official UN appointments and peace initiatives becomes increasingly important for public understanding of complex international situations.
