In the lead-up to Donald Trump’s return to the White House, social media has been flooded with a controversial image claiming to show future First Lady Melania Trump posing partially nude on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s private jet. The viral meme, which circulated across multiple platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky, TikTok, and X, carries the caption: “Fun fact: This famous picture of first lady Melania Trump was taken on Jeffrey Epstein’s plane.”
The photograph in question is authentic, showing Melania, then known as Melania Knauss, in a revealing modeling pose. However, the claim about its connection to Epstein is entirely false.
According to GQ magazine, which originally published the images in their January 2000 issue, the photoshoot took place on Donald Trump’s own customized Boeing 727 aircraft, not on any plane owned by Epstein. The photos were taken by professional photographer Antoine Verglas as part of a feature on Trump’s then-girlfriend.
When GQ republished the images in 2016, coinciding with Donald Trump’s first presidential election victory, the magazine provided clear context about the photoshoot’s origins. “We were bombarded by requests to shoot Melania,” GQ editor Dylan Jones explained. “Given that she was obviously so keen to be featured in GQ, we came up with a rather kitsch and camp story for her to feature in.”
The magazine also noted that Donald Trump himself had requested copies of the photographs be delivered to his office. “We framed the cover and a selection of prints and sent them as soon as we could,” the publication stated.
Archives of the original January 2000 print edition, maintained by the WorthPoint antiques and collectibles company, include photo captions explicitly mentioning Trump’s Boeing 727 as the location of the shoot. This documentation conclusively refutes claims linking the images to Epstein’s aircraft.
The circulation of this miscaptioned image comes at a sensitive time, as Melania Trump prepares to resume her role as First Lady following her husband’s November 2024 election victory. The false connection to Epstein, a convicted sex offender who died in jail while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, appears designed to create a damaging narrative by associating Melania with Epstein’s criminal activities.
In September 2024, ahead of releasing her memoir titled “Melania,” the future First Lady addressed criticism of her modeling career in a statement shared on social media. “Why do I stand proudly behind my nude modeling work? The more pressing question is – why has the media chosen to scrutinize my celebration of the human form in a fashion photoshoot?” she wrote. “Are we no longer able to appreciate the beauty of the human body? Throughout history, master artists have revered the human shape, evoking profound emotions and admiration.”
The misleading meme represents a pattern of disinformation surrounding the Trumps’ past connections. Previous unsubstantiated rumors have claimed Melania worked as an escort before meeting Donald Trump at a party hosted by Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s former associate who was later convicted of sex trafficking.
Media fact-checkers have reached out to Melania Trump’s spokesperson and photographer Antoine Verglas for additional comment on the miscaptioned images, but responses were not immediately available.
The incident highlights the persistent challenge of misinformation on social media platforms, particularly involving high-profile political figures. As Donald Trump prepares to return to the presidency in January 2025, scrutiny of both his and Melania’s past is likely to intensify, making verification of such claims increasingly important in the political discourse.
