Viral “Migrants in Sheep Costumes” Photo Proven False
A photograph circulating widely on social media since mid-November 2025, supposedly showing migrants dressed as sheep who were arrested attempting to illegally cross from Algeria into Spain, has been debunked as miscaptioned content.
The image, which depicts three individuals wearing woolly costumes with faces painted black sitting in what appears to be the back of a truck, spread rapidly across platforms including X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. One user on X claimed: “In Algeria, 3 individuals of unknown nationality were arrested as they attempted to cross into Spain…disguised as sheep.”
An Instagram post featuring the same image stated the incident occurred on November 2, 2025, furthering the narrative that this represented an unusual migrant smuggling attempt.
However, fact-checking reveals the photograph actually originated from entertainment footage created at least a year earlier. Reverse-image searches traced the content to TikTok videos from July 2024 that show the same costumed individuals performing choreographed dances to music from the popular children’s animated series “Shaun the Sheep.”
In the original videos, the group can be seen dancing to the cartoon’s theme song in a Ukrainian-language version. The viral image was simply a screenshot taken from this footage, flipped horizontally, and repurposed with a completely fabricated narrative about migration.
The animated series “Shaun the Sheep,” produced by Aardman Animations, has been a staple of children’s programming since premiering on BBC One in 2007, making the character’s distinctive appearance immediately recognizable to many viewers.
No credible news reports, law enforcement statements, or Europol announcements corroborate any incident involving migrants attempting to disguise themselves as sheep to cross borders. Thorough searches of official communications and news archives yield no mentions of such an unusual smuggling attempt.
This fabrication emerges against the backdrop of genuine concerns about irregular migration in the region. In August 2025, Europol did report on Spanish authorities dismantling a smuggling network transporting migrants from Algeria to Spain via boat routes. This legitimate operation involved significant resources, with investigators estimating the criminal network had invested over €1 million in boats and equipment to facilitate large-scale migrant smuggling operations.
The falsely captioned sheep costume image represents a growing trend of misinformation surrounding migration issues. Snopes, the fact-checking organization that investigated this claim, previously debunked similar fabricated content, including fake video footage purportedly showing migrants ambushing U.S. Marines.
Migration between North Africa and Spain remains a significant policy challenge for European authorities. The Strait of Gibraltar and other Mediterranean routes continue to be used by migrants seeking entry to Europe, with criminal networks facilitating dangerous crossings that have resulted in numerous tragedies.
This misinformation incident highlights the importance of verifying viral content before sharing, especially when it portrays unusual or sensationalized scenarios involving vulnerable populations. Social media users are encouraged to consult multiple reliable sources before accepting and sharing dramatic claims, particularly those involving immigration and border security issues.
