The escalating conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran has spawned numerous rumors and misinformation across social media platforms, particularly regarding the whereabouts of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his family members.
In late February, after weeks of mounting tension, the United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran, triggering not only a regional crisis but also an online information war. Social media platforms quickly became flooded with unverified claims about high-profile Israeli figures allegedly fleeing the country.
One particularly viral claim focused on Netanyahu supposedly escaping to Germany. The rumor gained significant traction when a TikTok video showing the official Israeli government airplane “Wing of Zion” on a Berlin airport runway accumulated over two million views. The video creator explicitly claimed: “So Netanyahu has officially fled to Germany,” using flight data as supposed evidence.
However, this claim proved misleading. While flight data and media reports confirm the Israeli government plane did land in Berlin on Saturday, February 28, Netanyahu was not aboard. A German government official told Reuters that the aircraft had landed in Germany for safety reasons, with only crew members on board. The source added that the flight had been registered in advance by Israeli authorities, noting that similar precautionary relocations of government aircraft had occurred during previous regional conflicts.
Evidence further contradicting the claim includes Netanyahu’s documented activities in Israel during this same period. On March 1, he met with senior commanders from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Mossad in Tel Aviv. The following day, March 2, Netanyahu made a well-documented visit to Beit Shemesh, a Jerusalem suburb that had been hit by an Iranian missile strike.
The TikTok user who originally posted the video later added a correction clarifying that Netanyahu was not on the plane. By then, however, the misleading information had already spread widely across TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), with some users even speculating about Netanyahu’s alleged precise location in Berlin.
Another false narrative targeted the prime minister’s son, Yair Netanyahu. Social media posts with nearly six million views on X claimed he was “living in a luxury apartment in Miami with $680,000/year in state-funded personal security” while “Americans are dying for Israel in the Middle East.” These posts featured photos of Yair by a swimming pool and on a balcony wearing light clothing, seemingly enjoying a carefree lifestyle.
A reverse image search revealed these photos were at least two years old and not representative of Yair’s current situation. Responding directly to these allegations, Yair Netanyahu posted a selfie from Jerusalem on his personal X account, stating: “I’m in Israel right now — not at the beach in Miami.”
These cases illustrate how easily misinformation can spread during times of international conflict. While the Israeli government plane did indeed travel to Berlin, conflating this with false claims about the prime minister’s whereabouts created misleading narratives that rapidly gained traction online.
The proliferation of such rumors highlights the importance of verification in the digital age, particularly during periods of heightened tension when information can be weaponized. As the conflict in the Middle East continues to unfold, distinguishing fact from fiction remains crucial for the public’s understanding of these complex geopolitical events.
The misrepresentations about the Netanyahu family also demonstrate how old images and partial truths can be repurposed to craft compelling but false narratives that align with particular political viewpoints or exploit existing tensions surrounding the ongoing conflict.
