In a dramatic turn of political events, recent claims suggesting a Senate leadership shakeup have been categorically debunked by official sources. Contrary to widely circulating social media posts, Senator Tito Sotto remains the Senate President of the Philippines, while Senator Alan Peter Cayetano continues in his role as Senate Minority Leader.

The false information, which spread rapidly across social media platforms, garnered over 14,400 reactions, 4,300 comments, and 584 shares since being posted on April 4. The misleading post featured a composite image showing Sotto, Cayetano, Vice President Sara Duterte, Bicol Saro Representative Terry Ridon, Batangas 2nd District Representative Gerville Luistro, and Senate blue ribbon committee chair Ping Lacson.

Most notably, the viral image displayed Cayetano wearing what appeared to be a judicial robe during a supposed swearing-in ceremony. The accompanying text in Filipino declared “Game over na! Senado solid Sara na! Cayetano nanumpa na!” (Game over! The Senate turns into solid Sara supporters! Cayetano has been sworn in!).

Fact-checking efforts reveal that the photograph of Cayetano was actually taken in September 2025 by Philippine Star photojournalist Jesse Bustos. The original image documented Cayetano taking his oath as a member of the Senate Electoral Tribunal, a body responsible for resolving electoral disputes involving senators—not assuming the Senate presidency as falsely claimed.

The official website of the Philippine Senate confirms that Sotto remains in his position as Senate President, a role he assumed on September 8, 2025, after Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero was removed amid the flood control scandal.

Political tensions in the Senate have been evident in recent months. In February 2026, Sotto himself acknowledged an unsuccessful attempt to unseat him and install Senator Loren Legarda in his place. The Senate President credited his majority bloc for helping maintain his leadership position despite the challenge.

The misinformation emerges against the backdrop of renewed impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte in the House justice committee. During the first impeachment attempt against Duterte in 2025, Cayetano had suggested returning the impeachment complaint to the House to address alleged constitutional issues, a position that received support from Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, a known Duterte ally.

Following the Supreme Court’s July 2025 decision that effectively blocked Duterte’s impeachment, Cayetano was among senators who voted to archive the impeachment articles. He explained at the time that archiving meant the case was effectively dead unless the Supreme Court reversed its ruling.

The political landscape shifted again in February 2026 with the filing of new impeachment complaints against the Vice President, creating a complex political environment where misinformation can easily flourish.

This isn’t the first instance of false claims about Senate leadership changes. Multiple similar rumors have been debunked in the past, pointing to a pattern of misinformation surrounding Philippine Senate politics.

As the House justice committee continues its hearings on Vice President Duterte’s impeachment, observers note that accurate information about Senate leadership becomes increasingly critical to public understanding of the political process. The spread of such misinformation underscores the ongoing challenge of maintaining factual discourse in Philippine politics, particularly during periods of heightened institutional tensions.
