Senator Kennedy’s Alleged Confrontation with Ocasio-Cortez on Green New Deal: A Fact Check
A fabricated political confrontation has been circulating widely across social media platforms, falsely claiming that Republican Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana publicly berated Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senate Democratic leadership over a “$93 trillion Green New Deal 2.0” during a C-SPAN broadcast.
The viral story, which began spreading in November 2023, describes a dramatic Senate floor showdown where Kennedy supposedly read from a folder labeled “DEM RECEIPTS – DO NOT BEND,” exposing alleged financial improprieties by Ocasio-Cortez and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. According to the post, Kennedy’s remarks left the chamber in “funeral-quiet” silence.
However, no such exchange ever took place. A thorough search of C-SPAN archives and other reliable news sources reveals no record of this confrontation. The fabricated account contains numerous factual inaccuracies, including the scenario itself—members of the House of Representatives, like Ocasio-Cortez, do not regularly speak on the Senate floor.
The viral post includes several demonstrably false claims. It alleges Ocasio-Cortez’s net worth jumped from $29,000 to $12.4 million between 2020 and 2025, a claim previously debunked by fact-checkers. Financial disclosure records show no evidence of such wealth accumulation by the congresswoman.
Other fabricated elements include assertions about Ocasio-Cortez receiving “$4.7 million in dark money” through ActBlue, claims about her mother owning “seven rental properties,” and allegations regarding her former chief of staff Saikat Chakrabarti.
The post also makes false claims about Chuck Schumer, stating he lives in an “$8.2 million Park Slope brownstone,” when in fact, according to The New York Times, Schumer purchased his Brooklyn apartment in 1983 for approximately $157,000. Similarly, the allegation that Schumer’s wife Iris Weinshall has a “$47 million net worth from Goldman Sachs board seat” is fabricated. Weinshall serves as the chief operating officer and treasurer of the New York Public Library and has no documented connection to Goldman Sachs.
Digital forensic analysis suggests the content was likely created using artificial intelligence tools. When analyzed with AI-detection software, results varied—Copyleaks indicated a 100% likelihood of AI-generated content, while ZeroGPT showed only a 1.88% match, highlighting the challenges in definitively identifying AI-created text.
The source of the misinformation appears to be a network of Facebook pages with connections to Vietnam. The page “Kienen-Patricia-Natasja,” which shared the original viral post, listed at least two page managers residing in Vietnam according to Facebook’s transparency tools. By the following day, this was changed to show only one Vietnam-based manager.
This pattern matches previous investigations into Vietnam-based Facebook operations that distribute fabricated political content and celebrity stories, often directing users to ad-filled websites. The pages typically use sensationalist headlines and AI-generated images to drive engagement.
The viral nature of the false story—which claimed to have received “28 million concurrent viewers” and allegedly trended worldwide for 36 hours—demonstrates how quickly misinformation can spread across platforms including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Truth Social, and X (formerly Twitter).
This incident highlights the growing challenge of distinguishing authentic political reporting from AI-generated misinformation, particularly as the technology becomes more sophisticated and the sources more difficult to trace.
