In an era where social media can amplify falsehoods at lightning speed, a fabricated exchange between music icon Cher and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has gained significant traction online, highlighting the ongoing challenge of separating fact from fiction in today’s digital landscape.

The alleged confrontation, which never actually occurred, claimed that Leavitt had called the Grammy-winning singer “irrelevant” and “outdated,” prompting Cher to deliver a scathing response comparing their respective accomplishments. The fabricated quote attributed to Cher included pointed remarks about Leavitt’s brief political career and contained several factual inaccuracies about the press secretary’s background.

This fictional exchange spread rapidly across multiple social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Tumblr in December 2025. The rumor gained particular momentum when “The View” co-host and political commentator Ana Navarro shared the claim on Instagram, which was subsequently reposted by a verified account bearing actor John Leguizamo’s name.

Despite its widespread dissemination, the story is entirely manufactured. Fact-checkers have confirmed that Cher did not respond to any such comments from Leavitt, nor did the press secretary ever make derogatory remarks about the singer in the first place.

The fabricated quotes originated from an advertisement-laden article clearly created with artificial intelligence. The website hosting the content showed indicators that its operators were based in Vietnam. This pattern aligns with a troubling trend of false stories centered around celebrities and political figures being manufactured primarily to generate advertising revenue.

Comprehensive searches across major news outlets, political blogs, and search engines yielded no credible reports about any exchange between Cher and Leavitt. Had such a high-profile verbal confrontation actually taken place, it would have been extensively covered by mainstream media.

When contacted by fact-checkers, Navarro appears to have removed her post sharing the fabricated exchange, though it remains unclear whether this was in direct response to being informed of the story’s falsity.

The invented quotes contained several verifiable inaccuracies. For instance, the fabricated Cher response claimed Leavitt “lost two congressional races,” when in reality, according to Ballotpedia, she has only lost one. The fake quote also stated Leavitt served for “eight months” in the Trump administration, whereas BBC News reporting confirms she worked as a speechwriter and assistant press secretary from 2019 through January 2021, a significantly longer period.

Investigation into the rumor’s origins traced it to a December 9 NewsBreak post that had accumulated over 1,000 comments. The post linked to a December 8 article on an ad-filled website falsely claiming Cher had appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” with Mika Brzezinski to respond to Leavitt’s alleged comments.

The article concluded with dramatic, flowery language typical of AI-generated content: “She simply held up the mirror — and let the reflection do the talking… A sentence. A warning. A reminder that some legends don’t fade — they shine brighter under pressure.”

This incident represents just the latest in a series of fabricated stories involving Cher and other public figures. Previously, fact-checkers debunked another false claim suggesting Cher had told former President Donald Trump, “You are the most unattractive man I have ever met in my entire life.”

While Cher has been an outspoken critic of the Trump administration over the years, this supposed exchange with Leavitt joins the growing catalog of misinformation spread for clicks, engagement, and advertising revenue in today’s complex media environment.
