Danish Prime Minister Believes Trump Still “Very Serious” About Greenland Acquisition

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday that she believes US President Donald Trump remains “very serious” about his intentions to acquire Greenland, Denmark’s semi-autonomous Arctic territory.

The remarks come amid ongoing diplomatic discussions between the United States and Denmark regarding the strategic Arctic region, which has become increasingly important in global security and resource considerations.

This diplomatic matter, significant for Denmark, has recently been complicated by misleading social media content. Videos falsely captioned as “Denmark’s Hilarious Response to Trump’s Greenland Proposal” and “Danish Parliament laughs at Trump’s Nobel demands over Greenland control” have circulated widely, garnering hundreds of thousands of views in recent weeks.

Fact-checking by Euronews’ team “The Cube” revealed these viral clips were taken entirely out of context. The footage, authentic but misrepresented, actually dates back to October 3, 2019, and shows an unrelated parliamentary session.

The genuine laughter captured in the Danish parliament had nothing to do with Greenland or Trump. Rather, it erupted when Prime Minister Frederiksen struggled to maintain composure while explaining the government’s decision to purchase a camel named Ali alongside four circus elephants for more than €1.5 million.

This purchase followed Denmark’s 2019 ban on wild animals in circuses. Frederiksen explained to parliament that government advisors had recommended buying the camel alongside the elephants because they were supposedly “best friends” and inseparable. The laughter intensified when she revealed this was not actually the case, saying, “Unfortunately, Ali is not doing so well, and he wasn’t actually Ramboline’s [one of the elephants] best friend either, so it probably wasn’t such a good deal we made.”

Frederiksen’s recent comments at Munich come after what appeared to be improving relations between Denmark and the United States. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, the countries reached an agreement regarding Greenland’s future, though specific details remain vague.

Trump described the arrangement as providing the US with “total access” to Greenland, while NATO agreed to increase its strategic security presence in the Arctic region.

The renewed focus on Greenland highlights the territory’s growing geopolitical importance. The island, home to approximately 56,000 people, possesses substantial natural resources, including rare earth minerals critical for technology manufacturing. Additionally, its strategic location in the Arctic has become increasingly valuable as climate change opens new shipping routes and access to previously unreachable resources.

Trump first expressed interest in purchasing Greenland in 2019, when he confirmed media reports that he had discussed the possibility with advisers. The suggestion was initially met with firm rejection from both Danish and Greenlandic officials, with Frederiksen calling the idea “absurd” at the time.

The Arctic region has become a focal point of international competition, with Russia, China, and the United States all seeking to expand influence in the resource-rich area. Greenland’s vast ice sheet contains an estimated 13% of the world’s undiscovered oil and 30% of undiscovered natural gas, according to the US Geological Survey.

Despite Denmark’s historical sovereignty over Greenland, the territory maintains substantial autonomy in domestic affairs while Denmark retains control over foreign policy and defense matters. Any potential change in Greenland’s status would require complex diplomatic negotiations involving both Danish and Greenlandic authorities.

As climate change continues to transform the Arctic landscape, Greenland’s strategic and economic importance on the world stage appears likely to grow, ensuring it remains a focus of international diplomatic attention for years to come.
