House Speaker Romualdez Denies Issuing Apology to Duterte Family Amid Corruption Probe

House Speaker Martin Romualdez has firmly denied allegations that he apologized to the Duterte family over ongoing corruption investigations, dismissing viral social media posts containing his supposed confession as “fake news.”

The fabricated statement, which has been widely shared across multiple platforms, depicted Romualdez allegedly seeking forgiveness from the Dutertes while promising to “reveal everything” about higher powers supposedly dictating political events. The viral quote card included statements claiming regret for allowing “evil and greed for money” to prevail.

“Do not be fooled by those spreading false information. Verify first before believing and sharing,” Romualdez warned through his official Facebook page, categorically rejecting the authenticity of the statements attributed to him.

The timing of the fabricated apology is particularly notable, emerging just days after Romualdez released an actual video statement on April 21 addressing allegations of his involvement in the P560-billion flood control scandal. Far from apologetic, his genuine statement struck a defiant tone.

“I will not allow myself to be turned into the scapegoat in this flood control mess,” Romualdez declared in the authentic video. “I will not be the fall guy for other people’s corruption.”

The false narrative attempting to position Romualdez as a potential whistleblower comes amid significant legal challenges for the Leyte 1st District Representative. On April 22, the Sandiganbayan issued a Precautionary Hold Departure Order (PHDO) preventing him from leaving the Philippines while the Office of the Ombudsman investigates serious charges of plunder and graft against him.

Romualdez’s spokesperson has clarified that the lawmaker had already secured proper travel authority for a medical check-up in Singapore before the PHDO was issued, countering rumors that he was attempting to flee the country to avoid prosecution.

The corruption allegations have created political shockwaves across the Philippines. The Ombudsman and Senate blue ribbon committee have accused Romualdez of leveraging his former position as House Speaker to oversee a commission system in the massive flood control scandal.

In his defense, Romualdez has argued that his role as Speaker did not involve handling the technical implementation of the budget. He specifically pointed to former Ako Bicol Partylist representative and House appropriations chair Zaldy Co, along with former Senate president Chiz Escudero, as the key figures responsible for final budget decisions during the bicameral conference committee process.

The controversy highlights growing political tensions between various power centers in Philippine politics. President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has maintained distance from the controversy, with Malacañang releasing a statement on April 23 indicating that the President did not interpret Romualdez’s remarks as being directed at him.

The spread of the fabricated apology demonstrates the increasingly contentious information environment surrounding Philippine politics, where disinformation campaigns can quickly gain traction through social media channels. Fact-checkers have urged the public to verify information before sharing, particularly when it involves purported statements from high-ranking government officials.

As investigations into the flood control scandal continue, the incident underscores the complex interplay between politics, public perception, and accountability in the Philippines’ governance structures, with serious implications for public trust in democratic institutions.
