In a swirl of misinformation that gained traction across multiple social media platforms in November 2024, users circulated claims that a well-known modeling photograph of Melania Trump was taken aboard Jeffrey Epstein’s aircraft. The viral posts, which appeared on Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter), suggested an inappropriate connection between the future first lady and the convicted sex offender.

The claim is false. While the photograph in question is indeed authentic and shows Melania Trump (then Melania Knauss) posing partially nude, it was not taken on Epstein’s plane.

According to GQ magazine, which originally published the photos in their January 2000 issue, the provocative photoshoot was conducted aboard Donald Trump’s own customized Boeing 727 aircraft. Photographer Antoine Verglas captured the images, which featured Melania with handcuffs, diamonds, and a chrome pistol—styling choices the magazine later described as reflective of the “lads mag era.”

The publication revisited these photos in November 2016, coinciding with Donald Trump’s first presidential election victory. In their retrospective piece, GQ editor Dylan Jones explained, “We were bombarded by requests to shoot Melania. Given that she was obviously so keen to be featured in GQ, we came up with a rather kitsch and camp story for her to feature in.” Jones also noted that Donald Trump had requested framed copies of the cover and selected prints be delivered to his office after publication.

WorthPoint, an antiques and collectibles archiving service, maintains images of the original print edition of the January 2000 GQ issue, which clearly identifies Trump’s Boeing 727 as the location for the photoshoot in its captions.

The false association with Epstein appears to be an attempt to imply improper connections between the Trump family and the disgraced financier, who died in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Such misleading claims demonstrate how easily contextual information about public figures can be manipulated on social media platforms.

In September 2024, prior to the release of her memoir simply titled “Melania,” the former first lady addressed her nude modeling work in a statement shared on social media. “Why do I stand proudly behind my nude modeling work? The more pressing question is – why has the media chosen to scrutinize my celebration of the human form in a fashion photoshoot?” she wrote. “Are we no longer able to appreciate the beauty of the human body? Throughout history, master artists have revered the human shape, evoking profound emotions and admiration.”

Melania Trump’s modeling career has been the subject of various rumors and innuendos over the years, including unfounded claims that she worked as an escort before meeting Donald Trump. These types of allegations, often lacking substantiation, reflect the heightened scrutiny and sometimes malicious targeting that political figures and their families face in the digital age.

The case of the miscaptioned Melania Trump photograph serves as a reminder of how easily visual content can be divorced from its original context and repurposed to suggest false narratives or associations. In an era of rapidly spreading social media content, verifying claims through reliable sources remains essential before accepting or sharing potentially misleading information.
