A claim circulating on social media in June 2026 suggesting Hunter Biden seriously announced he would consider running as California Governor Gavin Newsom’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2028 presidential election has been rated as a mixture of truth and falsehood by fact-checking organizations.
The controversy began when Hunter Biden appeared on Newsom’s podcast “This is Gavin Newsom” in early June. During the introduction, Newsom introduced Biden while smiling as a potential 2028 presidential candidate. Biden responded in kind, also smiling, and said he would run but only as Newsom’s vice president, adding that the vice president’s residence is “a lot cooler” and that it’s “a lot easier job too.”
A preview clip of this exchange, highlighted by entertainment outlet TMZ on June 11 before the full episode aired, quickly spread across social media platforms. The Polymarket betting platform’s account posted on X, stating that Hunter Biden had officially announced he was considering a 2028 campaign as Newsom’s running mate. Similar posts appeared across Bluesky, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other platforms, with many users treating the comment as a genuine political announcement.
Major media outlets picked up the story, though with varying interpretations. The New York Post ran the headline “Hunter Biden teases massive new role with Gavin Newsom,” while TMZ published “Hunter Biden says he’d run in 2028 with Gavin Newsom.” The coverage sparked widespread discussion about whether the former president’s son was seriously entering the political arena.
However, evidence clearly indicates the remark was intended as humor rather than a serious political announcement. The full podcast episode, released on June 12, revealed that both Biden and Newsom laughed immediately after the exchange in question, a moment that was notably absent from the viral preview clip circulating on social media.
Biden himself clarified his intentions on social media platform X. In a June 12 post, he joked, “Just saying… No Democrat has won the White House this century without a Biden on the ticket.” When another user criticized him for “trying to run with gavin newsome,” Biden responded directly: “Jeez man have a sense of humor.”
Despite its attention-grabbing headline, even the New York Post’s article acknowledged in its text that Biden’s remark was a joke. TMZ’s coverage was more ambiguous, reporting that “Whether Hunter is serious or simply having some fun with the governor, his 2028 strategy appears simple: let Gavin do the heavy lifting.”
The podcast appearance came during a period when Hunter Biden has been increasingly active and candid on social media. He recently announced he has been free from drugs and alcohol for seven years, and his X account biography now describes him as “Artist. Author. Recovery Advocate.” He has also demonstrated a willingness to engage with humor on the platform, previously responding to an accusation about cocaine found in the White House by writing, “It most definitely was not. I would never have forgotten my drugs.”
As of the time of reporting, Governor Newsom has not made any official announcement regarding a presidential run in 2028. Fact-checking organization Snopes reached out to Biden for official confirmation that the comment was intended as a joke but had not received a response.
The incident highlights how brief video clips and quotes taken out of context can spread rapidly on social media, often stripping away important context such as tone, body language, and subsequent clarifications. The visual cues of both men smiling during the exchange and their laughter immediately afterward, combined with Biden’s direct clarification on social media, strongly support the conclusion that the remark was made in jest rather than as a serious political announcement.
This episode serves as another example of the challenges in interpreting political communication in the social media age, where humor and serious statements can easily be confused when context is removed or ignored.
