Coast Guard Halts Florida Man’s Atlantic Crossing Attempt in Hamster Wheel-Like Vessel

In a bizarre maritime incident that captured international attention, Florida resident Reza Baluchi was intercepted by the U.S. Coast Guard while attempting to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a homemade watercraft resembling a giant hamster wheel.

The Coast Guard confirmed they stopped Baluchi in 2023 as he set out on what would have been an extraordinarily dangerous journey from Florida to London in his self-designed “hydropod” – a floating apparatus kept afloat by a combination of wiring and buoys that moves forward as the occupant runs inside it, similar to a hamster wheel.

According to Coast Guard officials, they deemed Baluchi’s Atlantic crossing attempt “manifestly unsafe” and ordered him to abandon the journey. Reports indicate Baluchi initially resisted Coast Guard intervention for several days, leading to a standoff at sea.

“Coast Guard boarding team members embarked Mr. Baluchi aboard a Coast Guard cutter for basic medical treatment, shelter, food, and water before transferring him to law enforcement authorities ashore in Miami on Friday, September 1,” the U.S. Coast Guard Southeast District stated in an official release. The Coast Guard also mentioned they were “working with the U.S. Attorney’s Office to pursue federal charges against Mr. Reza Baluchi for his alleged criminal conduct on the high seas.”

Some confusion exists regarding whether Baluchi was formally arrested. While multiple news outlets reported an arrest, Baluchi himself insisted in an interview that he was merely stopped, not arrested. The exact legal status of the incident remains unclear.

During the confrontation, a misunderstanding arose when Coast Guard personnel believed Baluchi had threatened to detonate a bomb on his vessel. Baluchi later explained to investigators that he was referencing the Coast Guard’s deflation and sinking of his previous hydropod in 2016 when he mentioned the words “blow up.” He attributed the misunderstanding to the noise of the Coast Guard boat’s engine and his Iranian accent when speaking English.

This was not Baluchi’s first attempt at an ambitious ocean crossing. The Coast Guard had previously intercepted similar voyages by Baluchi in 2014, 2016, and 2021, establishing a pattern of dangerous maritime adventures that authorities have consistently deemed unsafe.

Baluchi is no stranger to extreme endurance challenges. According to his website, he previously ran “around the perimeter of United States,” covering over 11,720 miles in 202 days, purportedly setting a world record. His Atlantic crossing attempt was part of a larger vision to run through “198 recognized countries” and paddle his hydropod across oceans.

Despite his latest setback, Baluchi remains undeterred. He told investigators he has modified his plans and is now preparing for a global journey beginning in Japan and heading toward America, using his hydropod for ocean segments. He claims to be working with a 17-person team to upgrade the design of his vessel with enhanced safety features, with a planned departure in December 2025.

“I only do stunts like this for charity or to inspire people to follow their dreams,” Baluchi explained, emphasizing that his mission is to show “that anything is possible if only you believe.”

Maritime law experts note that such unauthorized voyages in non-seaworthy vessels present significant risks not only to the individuals attempting them but also to rescue personnel who may be called upon to intervene in dangerous conditions. Coast Guard resources are regularly diverted from other missions to respond to such situations, creating additional public safety concerns.

The Coast Guard has not provided further details about potential federal charges against Baluchi, leaving questions about the legal consequences he might face for his repeated attempts to cross the ocean in his unconventional vessel.

The sheer audacity and ingenuity of this Florida man’s plan is almost admirable, even if it was manifestly unsafe as the Coast Guard determined. I’m curious to learn more about his motivations and how he came up with the idea for this ‘hydropod’ contraption.

    • I agree, the engineering behind it is quite fascinating, even if the endeavor was extremely perilous. I wonder if this individual has any prior experience or training in maritime engineering or extreme adventuring.

  6. While I respect the spirit of adventure and innovation, attempting to cross the Atlantic in a homemade hamster wheel seems like an unnecessarily risky endeavor. I’m glad the Coast Guard was able to intervene and prevent what could have been a tragic outcome.

What an incredible story! I’m equal parts amazed and concerned by this Florida man’s attempt to cross the Atlantic in a homemade ‘hydropod’. While the engineering behind it is fascinating, the risks involved are simply too high. I’m glad the Coast Guard was able to intervene and stop this perilous journey.
