President Trump did not post about arresting James Comey, fact-checkers confirm

A fabricated social media post claiming that former President Donald Trump threatened to arrest late-night host Jimmy Kimmel has been debunked by fact-checkers. The false image, which circulated on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), purported to show Trump boasting about having former FBI Director James Comey arrested while warning Kimmel and others of similar consequences.

“I had James Comey arrested. That’s the kind of power you have when you’re President. Remember that, Jimmy Kimmel, and anyone else who thinks it’s funny to take shots at me,” read the fabricated message, which also referenced Trump’s attorney Todd Blanche and included vague threats toward Iran.

An investigation by Lead Stories found no evidence that Trump ever posted such a message on Truth Social, his preferred social media platform. Researchers manually reviewed Trump’s account and searched archived posts between April 24 and May 1, 2024, finding no matches for the phrase “I had James Comey arrested” or any content resembling the alleged threat.

Further searches across major news aggregators including Google News and Yahoo! News revealed no reporting on such a statement. Had Trump actually issued such an inflammatory threat, it would have generated significant media coverage given its implications for press freedom and potential abuse of presidential power.

While the specific post is fabricated, it plays into existing tensions between Trump and Kimmel. The former president has indeed publicly targeted the ABC late-night host on multiple occasions, calling for his termination and describing Kimmel’s comedy as “despicable” and “corrosive.” Trump has also suggested regulatory or legal consequences for networks that air content he considers unfair or harmful to him.

The fake post appears designed to exaggerate Trump’s actual rhetoric into something more explicitly authoritarian. Though Trump has not directly threatened to arrest Kimmel, he has demonstrated hostility toward the comedian and has called for consequences from ABC and parent company Disney.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenge of misinformation on social media platforms, where fabricated content can quickly spread and blur the lines between fact and fiction. The post’s formatting mimicked Truth Social’s interface, making it appear legitimate to casual observers unfamiliar with Trump’s actual communication style or posting habits.

The circulation of such fabricated content is particularly concerning in an election year, when accurate information about candidates’ statements and positions is essential for voters making informed decisions. Media literacy experts recommend verifying claims about public figures by checking official accounts and trusted news sources before sharing potentially misleading content.

As the presidential campaign intensifies, fact-checkers expect to see more sophisticated attempts to attribute false statements to candidates, making verification increasingly important for media consumers seeking accurate information about the electoral process.
