Fake Dawn News Website Spreads Disinformation About Pakistani Defense Minister

A fraudulent website impersonating Pakistan’s prominent English-language newspaper Dawn has been discovered spreading misinformation, according to reports that emerged on Tuesday. The counterfeit site, which falsely presents itself as part of the Dawn Media Group, has been publishing fabricated news stories.

The illegitimate webpage operates from the URL https://dawn.newspot.live/news/rpshytr/93282/ and has no connection whatsoever to Dawn Media Group or its legitimate operations. Most notably, the site recently published a fabricated report claiming that Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had criticized the Punjab government over governance failures and rising crime rates.

Media experts familiar with Dawn’s publishing standards immediately identified several red flags that expose the website as fraudulent. The text and headline of the fake article fail to adhere to Dawn’s established style guidelines. Additionally, the date displayed on the article incorrectly lists January 5 as a Monday, rather than the correct day of the week.

Perhaps most telling is the main image accompanying the fraudulent article, which appears to be AI-generated—a composite of disparate elements showing Minister Asif gesturing, an unidentified person in a black hoodie, and a police vehicle. The image also features overlaid text, a practice that Dawn explicitly avoids in its legitimate news reporting. The authentic Dawn newspaper clearly labels any AI-generated imagery, unlike this impostor site.

Technical analysis reveals that when users attempt to navigate to other sections of the fake site, they are redirected to Dawn’s authentic website—a tactic likely employed to enhance the impostor’s perceived legitimacy. Website hosting investigations have traced the fraudulent site to servers operated by US-based Namecheap, Inc.

This is not the first instance of Dawn being impersonated online. A similar fake news operation was detected in October 2025, when another counterfeit website purporting to be Dawn published false reports about Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan allegedly complaining about institutional overreach.

The emergence of sophisticated impostor news sites represents a growing challenge for established media organizations in Pakistan and globally. These sites exploit the credibility of trusted news brands to disseminate misinformation that can influence public opinion and potentially destabilize political situations.

Media literacy experts warn that such impersonation tactics are becoming increasingly sophisticated as bad actors utilize AI technology to create convincing fake content. The falsified Dawn website demonstrates how easily disinformation can be packaged to appear legitimate to casual readers.

For Pakistan’s media landscape, already navigating complex political and regulatory pressures, these impersonation attempts present an additional challenge. Dawn, founded in 1941 by Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, has long been regarded as one of Pakistan’s most credible news sources and maintains strict editorial standards.

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority and other relevant bodies have yet to comment publicly on this specific impersonation case, though digital rights advocates have consistently called for stronger mechanisms to combat online misinformation.

Media consumers are advised to verify the authenticity of news sources by checking official domain names, examining writing styles and image quality, and confirming reports across multiple reliable platforms before accepting or sharing information.

As disinformation tactics continue to evolve, the incident highlights the critical importance of digital literacy and the ongoing challenges faced by legitimate news organizations in maintaining public trust in an era of increasingly sophisticated fake news operations.
