A digitally created image purporting to show Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny sharing a meal with Pope Leo XIV has been circulating widely on social media platforms, prompting fact-checkers to investigate its authenticity. The image, which spread across Instagram, X, and Threads in June 2026, has been confirmed as artificially generated content created for marketing purposes.
The photograph originated from DUAS Madrid, a café in Spain, which posted the image to its Instagram account with a caption that included the hashtag “#AI,” clearly indicating its artificial nature. The café also utilized Instagram’s voluntary AI labeling feature, which allows users to identify content generated by artificial intelligence. When viewers clicked on the Madrid location tag above the image, they could access an “AI info” pop-up confirming that the account had added an AI label to the content.
The timing of the post appeared strategically planned to coincide with Pope Leo XIV’s papal visit to Madrid on June 6. The café’s caption read, “Madrid, if you’re in town for the celebrations this weekend, you know where to find us,” suggesting the establishment was attempting to capitalize on the heightened attention surrounding the Pope’s visit and Bad Bunny’s concurrent tour performances in the Spanish capital.
According to reports from established news outlets including CNN and the New York Times, Pope Leo XIV did indeed meet with Bad Bunny during his time in Madrid. However, the actual encounter occurred on June 8, two days after DUAS Madrid posted the AI-generated image. The Vatican did not release any photographs of the brief meeting, leaving the public without official documentation of the encounter. A search of the Vatican News website yielded no results for “Bad Bunny” at the time of investigation.
Close examination of the image revealed several telltale signs of AI generation. Technical anomalies appeared throughout the photograph, particularly in the rendering of Bad Bunny’s jewelry. Zooming in on the rapper’s left arm and right fingers showed distorted accessories that the AI program failed to properly create. Additionally, the tattoos visible on Bad Bunny’s skin in the fake image did not correspond with his actual body art.
Other visual inconsistencies included deformities around Pope Leo XIV’s glasses and irregularities near the small table positioned beside the pontiff. These imperfections are characteristic of current AI image generation technology, which often struggles with fine details and complex patterns.
Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has become one of the most influential Latin music artists of the past decade. His global popularity has made him a frequent subject of misinformation and digitally manipulated content. The spread of AI-generated images featuring celebrities has become increasingly common as the technology becomes more accessible and sophisticated.
This incident highlights the growing challenge of distinguishing authentic content from AI-generated material on social media platforms. While DUAS Madrid did properly label their image as artificial intelligence-generated content, many users who encountered the photograph on other platforms may not have been aware of its fabricated nature. The image’s viral spread demonstrates how quickly misleading content can circulate, even when creators include appropriate disclaimers.
The case also reflects broader trends in digital marketing, where businesses leverage current events and celebrity appearances to gain attention online. By creating timely AI-generated content connected to high-profile events, establishments can increase their visibility and engagement on social media platforms.
This is not the first time Bad Bunny has been featured in misleading imagery. Fact-checkers have previously debunked other AI-generated or manipulated images involving the artist, including a fabricated photograph allegedly showing him burning an American flag during preparations for a Super Bowl halftime performance.
As AI image generation technology continues to advance, distinguishing authentic photographs from digital creations will become increasingly difficult for average social media users. The incident underscores the importance of media literacy and the need for social media platforms to implement robust labeling systems for AI-generated content.
