The Truth Behind the Headlines: Inside MindaNews’ Fact-Checking Mission
In an era where misinformation spreads at unprecedented speeds, MindaNews has positioned itself as a crucial guardian of truth in the Philippines’ media landscape, particularly for the Mindanao region, which has long suffered from misrepresentation in national and international reporting.
As independent journalists, the MindaNews team considers truth-telling their fundamental responsibility, providing accurate information that enables citizens to make informed decisions about issues affecting their daily lives.
The organization employs a methodical approach to evaluating claims, using a five-tier rating system. Claims completely invented receive a “FAKE” rating, while those contradicting established facts, events, or official records are labeled “FALSE.” The “MISLEADING” designation applies to statements that, while containing elements of truth, have been manipulated to create different impressions serving particular interests. Visual content that has been manipulated receives an “ALTERED” rating, while statements requiring additional explanation for clarity are marked as “MISSING CONTEXT.”
Founded in 2001, MindaNews was established specifically to counter the problem of misinformation about Mindanao – an issue that existed long before terms like “fake news” entered the mainstream vocabulary. The organization has consistently maintained rigorous verification standards, thoroughly vetting all reports before publication.
“Mindanao has suffered misinformation and disinformation long before these words became fashionable,” explained a representative from the organization. This historical context underscores why fact-checking isn’t merely an add-on service for MindaNews but core to its founding mission.
While the organization has always prioritized accuracy, its formal fact-checking initiative with standardized formatting began in October 2021 as part of Internews’ Philippine Fact-Checker Incubator (PFCI) project. Internews, an international non-profit operating in 100 countries, provided initial support for this specialized program.
MindaNews’ commitment to combating misinformation extends beyond its own publications. The organization co-founded Tsek.ph, a collaborative initiative among Philippine media institutions that worked to counter false information during both the 2019 and 2022 election cycles – periods typically characterized by heightened misinformation campaigns.
Financial independence is critical to MindaNews’ fact-checking credibility. The organization sustains its operations primarily through subscriptions to its news service and book sales. While it accepts grants from non-state actors, editorial decisions remain entirely independent.
Notably, MindaNews maintains a strict policy against accepting funding from politicians or domestic and foreign government entities specifically for its fact-checking operations. This firewall helps ensure that verification work remains free from political influence or the perception thereof.
For its broader journalistic activities, MindaNews has received support from organizations including the National Endowment for Democracy and UNESCO, which have funded reporting, staff compensation, administrative costs, and journalist training programs. Its dedicated fact-checking initiatives have been supported by Internews (September 2021-October 2022) and the BUILD grant administered by the International Fact-Checking Network (August 2023-July 2024).
“As a matter of policy, MindaNews does not allow these funders to interfere in our editorial processes,” the organization states, emphasizing the importance of maintaining journalistic independence despite external funding.
Understanding that effective fact-checking requires community involvement, MindaNews actively encourages public participation. Readers are invited to submit leads not only for potential fact-checks but also for news stories of broader public interest. Each fact-check published by the organization includes an explicit invitation for reader contributions to this ongoing verification process.
In a region where accurate information can directly impact peace processes, economic development, and cultural understanding, MindaNews’ fact-checking initiative represents more than just correcting falsehoods – it’s providing an essential service for a more informed, empowered Mindanao.
