Fact Check: AI-Generated Video Falsely Shows Shashi Tharoor Praising Pakistan

A digitally manipulated video purporting to show Congress MP Shashi Tharoor praising Pakistan for its diplomatic stance in the T20 World Cup controversy has been debunked as fake by fact-checkers.

In the manipulated clip circulating on social media platforms, Tharoor appears to say: “I think how Pakistan played is indeed brilliant. I do not know what they would do on the field. But what they did diplomatically is absolute brilliance. The Indian cricket board was completely pinned hands down.”

The doctored video further shows the Thiruvananthapuram MP allegedly saying: “This serves as a lesson that good diplomacy can even make a weak nation appear as a goliath. Pakistan has done it, and I want to appreciate them for it. It is unthinkable.”

The fabricated clip emerged following Pakistan’s recent policy reversal regarding their participation in the T20 World Cup match against India. After initially threatening to boycott the February 15 fixture, the Pakistani government ultimately directed their cricket team, led by Salman Ali Agha, to proceed with the scheduled match.

An investigation conducted by India Today’s Fact Check team revealed several discrepancies in the viral video. Most notably, the voice attributed to Tharoor in the manipulated clip does not match his actual speaking voice and manner of expression.

Upon examining the source material, fact-checkers identified the original video, which was published by India Today on February 10 with the caption “Congress MP Shashi Tharoor On India Pakistan Match.” In stark contrast to the viral clip where he allegedly speaks in English, the authentic footage shows Tharoor speaking in Hindi.

In the genuine recording, Tharoor actually stated: “I am a politician, but I do not like politics in cricket and sports. I think sports are a different field, a different game. Let politicians do their politics somewhere else, diplomats do their work in diplomacy, and cricket players play their game. I am happy that at least cricket will move with this match. Who will win, and who will lose, that is another thing.”

This statement was independently corroborated by footage released by the Asian News International (ANI) agency on the same date, confirming that Tharoor made no remarks praising Pakistan as suggested in the manipulated video.

When contacted by fact-checkers, Tharoor’s office categorically denied the authenticity of the viral clip, confirming that the MP never made such statements about Pakistan’s diplomatic approach to the cricket controversy.

Forensic analysis of the audio extracted from the manipulated video provided further evidence of digital tampering. Using the University at Buffalo’s DeepFake-O-Meter technology, researchers found high probability scores indicating AI-generated content, with detection confidence levels of 87.8, 94.7, and 88.5 percent across three different detection algorithms.

This case highlights the growing concern around sophisticated AI tools being used to create convincing deepfakes of public figures. As the technology becomes more accessible, such manipulated media poses significant challenges for voters trying to discern authentic statements from fabrications, especially during politically sensitive periods.

The India-Pakistan cricket rivalry has historically been intertwined with geopolitical tensions between the neighboring countries. Sporting events between the two nations often attract massive viewership and carry diplomatic significance beyond the playing field. The upcoming T20 World Cup match is expected to draw global attention, both for its sporting competition and as a rare direct engagement between the two countries amid their complex bilateral relations.
