A spokesperson confirmed via Fetterman’s official X account that the senator remained hospitalized so doctors could adjust his medication regimen.

The American Heart Association classifies ventricular fibrillation as “the most serious abnormal heart rhythm” that can potentially lead to sudden cardiac death if untreated. This health episode adds to Fetterman’s documented cardiac history, which includes a 2022 stroke during his Senate campaign. At that time, he disclosed diagnoses of cardiomyopathy and atrial fibrillation, another type of abnormal heart rhythm.
Despite the legitimate health scare, false reports of the senator’s death began circulating on social media shortly after news of his hospitalization broke. The source of these unfounded claims has been identified as a social media user with the handle @jnyboy, who published multiple posts falsely announcing Fetterman’s passing. One post included an illustration of the senator with the text “John Karl Fetterman 1969-2025.”
This is not the first time this particular account has spread misinformation about Fetterman. The same user previously published similar death hoaxes about the Pennsylvania senator in both 2023 and 2024, establishing a pattern of false reporting. The account, which describes itself as an “anarcho-funposter,” even created and shared a fabricated Snopes fact-check article about the senator’s supposed death.
Snopes has reached out to Cabelle St. John, Fetterman’s chief of staff, regarding the rumors, and also attempted to contact the X user who originated the false claims to determine if they consider their content to be parody or satire. No responses had been received at the time of publication.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of misinformation on social media platforms, particularly regarding public figures’ health status. Official channels, including statements from Fetterman’s office and reporting from established news organizations like The Associated Press, remain the most reliable sources for accurate information about the senator’s condition.
Fetterman, who has served in the Senate since January 2023, has been open about his health challenges since his stroke in May 2022, which occurred during his campaign against Republican candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz. His recovery and subsequent service have made him a notable figure in discussions about disability and public office.
As the senator continues his medical treatment, his office has not provided a timeline for his release from the hospital or return to Senate duties.
