Fact-Checking Group Corrects Claims on Welsh Prescription Policy and Identifies Fake Channel Crossing Videos

Full Fact, the UK’s largest fact-checking organization, has identified and corrected several misleading claims circulating in British media and social networks, including statements about Reform UK’s position on Welsh prescriptions and fabricated videos of migrant boat incidents.

In a recent television appearance, Welsh First Minister and Welsh Labour leader Eluned Morgan incorrectly stated that Reform UK had not committed to maintaining free prescriptions in Wales. This claim has been determined to be inaccurate by fact-checkers.

Despite Reform UK’s Welsh manifesto not explicitly mentioning prescriptions, the party has publicly stated its intention to keep them free. During a televised debate on March 17, Reform’s Senedd candidate for Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd, James Evans, explicitly declared: “Reform UK will keep the NHS free at the point of delivery, and we will keep free prescriptions.”

This statement was subsequently shared across Reform UK Wales’ social media channels on both Facebook and X (formerly Twitter). Additional posts from Reform Senedd candidates and local branches reinforcing this position have also been documented.

Free prescriptions have been a hallmark of the Welsh healthcare system since 2007, when the Welsh Government under Labour leadership abolished charges for residents. The policy remains popular and politically significant in Wales.

When contacted by Full Fact, a Reform UK spokesperson confirmed the party’s consistent position on maintaining free prescriptions in Wales and characterized Welsh Labour’s claim as “untrue.” Reform UK’s Welsh leader, Dan Thomas, has since reaffirmed the party’s commitment to continuing the policy.

In response, a Welsh Labour spokesperson defended the First Minister’s statement, pointing to Reform UK leader Nigel Farage’s previous comments about alternative NHS funding models and privatization, suggesting these could potentially impact prescription charges. The spokesperson also emphasized the absence of an explicit commitment to free prescriptions in Reform UK’s Welsh manifesto.

In a separate investigation, Full Fact exposed several AI-generated videos falsely depicting overturned dinghies in the English Channel. These fabricated videos, which have received thousands of likes on Facebook, make unfounded claims about migrant deaths, including allegations that over 100 lives were lost in a single crossing and that 23 people were “feared missing.”

Fact-checkers confirmed these videos were created using artificial intelligence. When analyzed through Google’s large language model Gemini, the videos were found to contain SynthID digital watermarks in both audio and visual elements, confirming they were generated or altered using Google AI technology.

Visual indicators of AI manipulation include blurred backgrounds of coastal cliffs and noticeable glitches in the depiction of debris floating in the sea.

While six migrants tragically died in April while attempting to cross the Channel, there have been no reports of mass casualties matching the scale claimed in these fabricated videos. According to Oxford University’s Migration Observatory, 24 confirmed deaths related to Channel crossings were documented in 2023.

Full Fact advises the public to verify sources before sharing such content and offers resources including a guide to identifying AI-generated material and a toolkit for spotting misinformation.

The spread of such falsified content comes amid ongoing political tensions surrounding migration policy and border control in the UK, highlighting the growing challenge of distinguishing authentic news from AI-generated disinformation.
