Disinformation Campaign Falsely Links Ukrainian Drones to Latvian Train Fire

A coordinated disinformation campaign has falsely claimed that a “Ukrainian drone” struck a passenger train in Latvia, according to Latvian authorities who have categorically refuted the allegations. The fabricated story spread rapidly across social media platforms this week, attempting to sow confusion amid legitimate incidents involving unidentified drones in Latvian airspace.

On May 7, Latvia confirmed that unidentified drones had entered its airspace from the direction of Russia, with two subsequently crashing on Latvian territory. That same day, anonymous social media accounts began circulating a video showing a train carriage on fire, falsely claiming it depicted a “Ukrainian drone” attack on the Riga-Daugavpils railway line.

Latvian police quickly debunked the claim, identifying the footage as showing an unrelated incident from May 5, when a train caught fire on the Nīcgale–Vabole section due to suspected engine damage. Around 60 passengers were safely evacuated with no injuries reported. Officials confirmed no drone incidents occurred on May 5.

“We urge residents to critically assess information available on the internet and to rely only on official sources of information,” the Latvian police said in their statement dismissing what they called “deliberately disseminated false information.”

The fabricated narrative, which spread in both Russian and English across multiple platforms, included dramatic embellishments claiming passengers were forced to sign non-disclosure agreements and that those who refused were “taken away” by authorities.

This disinformation effort comes amid legitimate security concerns in the Baltic region. On May 7, one drone crashed near an oil storage facility in the eastern city of Rezekne, close to the Russian border, while a second crashed drone has yet to be located. Latvian authorities have stated that confirming the origin of these drones will require a full investigation.

Military officials noted that the drone that crashed near the oil facility may have been drawn to the target because of its similarity to Russian oil infrastructure. One Latvian military official explained that AI-equipped long-range drones are often programmed to seek pre-determined targets based on visual characteristics.

This isn’t the first incident of its kind in the region. Finland and the Baltic states have previously reported stray drones entering their airspace during Ukrainian strikes on Russia. However, these governments have emphasized that regardless of the drones’ origin, Russia bears ultimate responsibility as the aggressor in the ongoing conflict.

Ukrainian officials have suggested an alternative explanation: that Russia may be deliberately diverting Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into NATO territory to create tensions between Ukraine and its allies. This tactic would align with established Russian influence operations aimed at weakening Western support for Ukraine.

Russian propaganda outlets have previously accused Baltic countries of allowing Ukrainian drones to transit their airspace en route to Russian targets – claims consistently denied by Baltic governments.

Security experts warn that such disinformation efforts are likely to continue as the conflict persists, targeting NATO’s eastern flank in particular. False narratives about NATO involvement or Ukrainian attacks on allied territory serve Russian interests by attempting to fracture the coalition supporting Ukraine.

Latvia, along with its Baltic neighbors Estonia and Lithuania, has been among the strongest supporters of Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The region has been consistently targeted by Russian information operations due to its strategic importance as NATO’s eastern border.

Authorities encourage citizens to verify information through official channels and recognize that coordinated disinformation campaigns typically exploit real events by adding fabricated elements designed to inflame tensions and create confusion.
