Military Training Exercise at IMIP Airport Misrepresented as Government Seizure

A viral video circulating on social media has falsely claimed that Indonesian authorities seized PT Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) Airport on December 17, 2025, due to alleged illegal operations. Fact-checking by Tempo reveals the footage actually shows a planned military training exercise, not an enforcement action against the facility.

The misleading video, which depicts security personnel establishing police lines at the airport, has gained traction online amid ongoing controversy surrounding the airport’s operational status. However, verification through credible media sources confirms the scenes were part of a large-scale Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) training exercise conducted on November 19, 2025.

The military exercise involved nearly 27,000 TNI personnel from various branches participating in an integrated joint command training designed to enhance operational readiness. Multiple national news outlets, including Metro TV, CNN Indonesia, and Kompas TV Palu, reported on the exercise the following day.

According to information published on the TNI’s official website, the training included a simulation of intercepting a foreign aircraft that had violated Indonesian airspace. The scenario involved deploying Sukhoi Su-27/30 fighter jets from Air Squadron 11 at Sultan Hasanuddin Air Force Base to intercept the aircraft, followed by Military Police and Rapid Response Forces securing the landing area – precisely the activities shown in the viral video.

The confusion surrounding the video emerges against a backdrop of genuine controversy regarding IMIP Airport’s legal status. In November 2025, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin publicly questioned the airport’s operations, specifically noting concerns that the facility was functioning without proper Customs and Immigration oversight.

PT IMIP, through its Media Relations Manager Dedy Kurniawan, has maintained that the airport is properly registered with the Ministry of Transportation. The company cites Article 247 of Law Number 1 of 2009 concerning Aviation, which allows legal entities to construct special airports for specific activities if they have obtained the required permits.

The airport had previously received international status through Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi’s Decree Number KM 38 issued in August 2025. However, following Defense Minister Sjamsoeddin’s scrutiny, Purwagandhi revoked the airport’s international designation on November 28, 2025, via Decree Number KM 55.

The IMIP complex represents a significant industrial development in Central Sulawesi, focused primarily on nickel processing and related industries. The status of its transportation infrastructure has become increasingly important as Indonesia positions itself as a key player in the electric vehicle battery supply chain.

While legitimate questions about the airport’s regulatory compliance remain unresolved, Tempo’s fact-checking team has conclusively determined that the video in question does not depict a government seizure of the facility. The circulation of this misleading content highlights the challenges of information verification in the digital age, particularly regarding politically and economically sensitive infrastructure projects.

Indonesian authorities have not issued any statements indicating plans to seize or shut down the IMIP Airport as of this reporting.
