Fact Check: Viral Video of Railway Station Rush Not Related to Special Electoral Revision

A video circulating on social media allegedly showing Rohingya immigrants fleeing West Bengal following the announcement of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has been found to be misleading and out of context.

The footage, which depicts a large crowd rushing at Sealdah railway station in Kolkata, was shared widely with claims connecting it to recent electoral verification processes. One social media user on X (formerly Twitter) posted the video with the caption: “SIR comes to Bengal. Rohingyas run from Bengal. Sealdah railway station.”

However, an investigation by fact-checkers has determined the video predates the announcement of the SIR initiative in West Bengal and shows an entirely different scenario.

The video first appeared on social media on October 15, nearly two weeks before the Election Commission of India announced the second phase of the SIR in 12 states and Union Territories, including West Bengal, on October 27. This timeline conclusively disproves any connection between the footage and the electoral revision exercise.

The original uploader of the video, identified as Tofick Khan, shared the clip on Facebook with an explanation that it showed a chaotic situation at Sealdah Station caused by two trains arriving simultaneously, resulting in a heavy rush during which two children reportedly fell on the platform.

Khan later posted a clarification video on November 5, explaining that he had traveled to Sealdah Station from Lalgola on October 15. Upon arrival, he witnessed confusion among passengers when another train was announced on the same platform line. The unexpected announcement triggered panic, causing passengers to rush, during which some children fell. Khan recorded the incident and shared it online.

Technical details from the video corroborate this explanation. The platform clock visible in the footage shows 4:19 PM, which aligns with the scheduled arrival time of the Lalgola-Sealdah passenger train at Sealdah station, typically around 4:00 PM. Additionally, another train departs Sealdah for Lalgola at 4:10 PM, creating a narrow time window between services that could potentially cause confusion among passengers.

The close scheduling of these trains, combined with routine delays in service, provides credibility to Khan’s account of the events that led to the rush captured in the video.

While there have been reports of undocumented immigrants leaving West Bengal for Bangladesh following the announcement of the electoral roll revision, this particular video does not document such movement. The SIR process, designed to verify voter identities and clean electoral rolls, has reportedly created concern among illegal immigrants in border areas, but the viral footage is unrelated to these developments.

The incident highlights the growing challenge of misinformation on social media platforms, where genuine footage is frequently repurposed with false narratives to support political claims or stoke communal tensions. Fact-checking organizations continue to play a crucial role in debunking such misleading content.

As the SIR process continues across multiple states, including West Bengal, authorities have urged citizens to rely on official sources for information and to verify claims before sharing potentially misleading content on social media platforms.
