A British influencer has been falsely identified on social media as one of the gunmen responsible for Australia’s deadliest mass shooting in decades, which claimed 15 lives at a Jewish Hanukkah celebration in Sydney’s Bondi Beach area.

Several Facebook posts claimed that a Lebanese-Palestinian man named Khaled al-Nablusi was a suspect in the December 14 attack, which Australian authorities are investigating as an act of terrorism targeting the Jewish community. These posts included two doctored photographs purportedly showing al-Nablusi, with one image featuring the Islamic State flag in the background.

The misinformation spread as Australian police confirmed they believe the actual perpetrators were inspired by the militant group. However, neither the name nor the photographs correspond to the two individuals — a father and son — identified by Australian authorities as the actual suspects.

New South Wales Police confirmed that officers at the scene shot and killed one suspect, later identified by Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon as 50-year-old Sajid Akram. His 24-year-old son was hospitalized with critical injuries and subsequently charged with 59 offenses, including terrorism and 15 counts of murder, according to police statements.

While police did not formally name the younger Akram in their statements, they confirmed the 24-year-old would appear in court on December 17. Court filings matching those details identified him as Naveed Akram.

Reuters found no evidence that Australian authorities had identified anyone named Khaled al-Nablusi in connection with the attack. Furthermore, NSW Police have stated they are not searching for any additional suspects directly involved in the shooting.

Through digital investigation, Reuters determined that the man in the two manipulated photos circulating on Facebook is actually British content creator and writer Charles Cornish-Dale, who is also known by his pen name, Raw Egg Nationalist.

Both images had been digitally altered to add thick facial hair to Cornish-Dale’s appearance. One photo was further manipulated to include an Islamic State flag in the background — a detail seemingly intended to strengthen the false connection to terrorism.

The original, unedited photographs were taken from Cornish-Dale’s own social media — one from an X (formerly Twitter) post he made in May 2023, and another from a thumbnail of a 2022 video interview where he discussed processed foods.

This case illustrates the increasingly common problem of digital manipulation being used to spread false information following major news events. Authentic photographs can be easily altered and presented in misleading contexts, particularly during periods of heightened tension and public interest.

The attack at Bondi Beach has shocked Australia, representing the country’s worst mass shooting since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, which led to significant gun control reforms. The targeting of a Jewish community event has raised concerns about rising antisemitism and religiously motivated violence, issues that have been amplified globally following ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

Australian authorities continue to investigate the attack’s motives and planning, while also working to combat misinformation that can increase community tensions in its aftermath.

When contacted by Reuters, New South Wales Police declined to comment specifically on the false narrative about Khaled al-Nablusi. Cornish-Dale also did not provide comment when reached regarding his misidentification as one of the attackers.
