Finnish authorities have firmly refuted online claims that Nigerian secessionist leader Simon Ekpa has been released from prison, according to information provided to Reuters by the East Finland Court of Appeal.

Social media posts circulating since October 19 falsely claimed that Ekpa had been freed, with one post stating: “Breaking !!!!! We are surprised that PM Simon Ekpa has been released and no body is talking about it.” These rumors gained traction across various platforms despite lacking credible sources or official confirmation.

The Päijät-Häme District Court sentenced Ekpa to six years in prison on September 1 after finding him guilty of serious charges including participating in terrorist group activities, public incitement to commit crimes for terrorist purposes, aggravated tax fraud, and violations of Finland’s Lawyers’ Act. State prosecutor Sampsa Hakala confirmed to Reuters in September that Ekpa had indicated his intention to appeal the conviction.

A spokesperson for the East Finland Court of Appeal addressed the situation directly, telling Reuters via email on October 22 that while Ekpa’s appeals have been filed, he remains in custody. “The hearing of the case will be held at the earliest in April and May 2026,” the spokesperson added, underscoring the lengthy judicial process ahead.

Ekpa has been a controversial figure in Nigeria’s complex political landscape. He leads a separatist group advocating for the secession of southeastern Nigeria to form an independent state of Biafra. The movement represents a revival of Biafran secessionist aspirations that previously led to a devastating civil war between 1967 and 1970 that claimed over a million lives.

According to Finnish media reports, Ekpa has resided in Finland since 2007, where he established himself and became a Finnish citizen while continuing to operate as a voice for Biafran independence. His activities eventually drew the attention of both Nigerian and Finnish authorities, with the latter taking legal action against him for various offenses related to his separatist activities.

The case has significant implications for both countries. For Nigeria, it represents a rare instance of international legal action against a figure challenging the country’s territorial integrity from abroad. For Finland, the case demonstrates the country’s commitment to addressing alleged terrorism-related activities conducted from within its borders, even when targeted at distant regions.

This is not the first time that misinformation has circulated regarding Ekpa’s legal situation. Reuters previously addressed false claims that his six-year sentence had been canceled shortly after it was handed down, highlighting the persistent spread of unverified information surrounding high-profile legal cases.

The confusion surrounding Ekpa’s status might stem from the complex and often lengthy appeals process in the Finnish judicial system, where cases can remain pending for extended periods while defendants pursue various legal remedies.

Despite multiple attempts to contact Ekpa’s legal representation for comment on his current status and the appeal process, his lawyer has not responded to requests for clarification.

As of October 29, no credible news sources or official statements have indicated any change in Ekpa’s incarceration status, confirming that he remains in Finnish custody while his appeal works through the judicial system.
