In a tragic incident on April 30, a cruise boat operated by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department capsized in the Bargi dam reservoir on the Narmada River near Jabalpur after encountering a severe storm. The vessel, carrying 39 tourists and two crew members, overturned while returning to shore, resulting in nine fatalities.

Among the most heart-wrenching discoveries during rescue operations was the recovery of the bodies of a mother and her four-year-old child. Rescuers found the mother still clutching her child to her chest in what appeared to be a final protective embrace. This poignant detail has resonated deeply with the public, becoming a focal point of coverage surrounding the disaster.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, an image purportedly showing this mother-child duo began circulating widely on social media platforms. One Facebook post sharing the image included an emotional caption describing how “the mother never let go of her son” even in death, calling it a testament to maternal devotion.

However, investigations reveal the circulating image is not authentic but was created using artificial intelligence. A detailed examination of verified news footage from the recovery operation contradicts elements in the viral image. NDTV’s coverage from May 1 clearly shows rescue teams bringing the actual victims to shore, with the mother and child wearing grey clothing and orange life jackets—not the dark blue clothing and red life jackets depicted in the viral image.

Further verification through Hindustan Times reporting, which included authentic photographs with faces blurred for privacy, confirmed the discrepancies in clothing colors between the actual victims and those in the circulating image.

Technical analysis of the viral image revealed telling inconsistencies characteristic of AI-generated content. Most notably, a bangle on the woman’s arm appears to merge unnaturally with her forearm, showing shadow irregularities typical of artificial rendering. When analyzed through Hive Moderation, an AI detection tool, the image was identified as 96.2 percent likely to be artificially generated.

The Jabalpur District Collector has officially addressed the misinformation, posting on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that “This photo is AI-generated or from some other source. It has no connection with the Bargi cruise accident.”

This incident highlights the growing challenge of misinformation during disasters and tragedies, particularly with the advancement of AI technology capable of creating increasingly convincing fake images. Such fabrications can complicate disaster response efforts and cause additional distress to families of victims.

The Bargi dam disaster has already prompted scrutiny of safety protocols for tourism operations on reservoirs and other bodies of water in Madhya Pradesh. Local authorities have launched an investigation into whether proper weather warnings were heeded and if the vessel was operating within capacity limits.

As recovery operations concluded, attention has shifted to providing support for survivors and families of the deceased. The state government has announced compensation packages for the victims’ families, while also pledging to review safety regulations for water-based tourism activities throughout the region.

The circulation of the AI-generated image serves as a reminder of the importance of media literacy and verification in the digital age, particularly during sensitive events where misinformation can compound trauma and hinder accurate reporting.
