In a surge of misinformation following recent state assembly elections, social media platforms have become battlegrounds for misleading political narratives aimed at stoking communal tensions.
A viral video combining two unrelated clips has been circulating widely, falsely portraying post-election celebrations in West Bengal and Kerala with communally charged claims. The video juxtaposes footage of people waving Indian flags alongside footage of green flag celebrations, suggesting a troubling contrast between BJP and Congress alliance supporters.
The misleading post claimed that while BJP supporters in West Bengal celebrated with Indian national flags, Congress alliance supporters in Kerala celebrated with Pakistani flags. This inflammatory comparison gained traction on multiple social media platforms, with one Facebook user captioning it: “Celebrations with national flags where the BJP won; celebrations with Pakistani flags where the Congress alliance won.”
Fact-checking efforts have thoroughly debunked these claims. The first clip, purportedly showing celebrations in West Bengal after BJP’s victory, is actually older footage from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Reverse image searches revealed an uncropped version of the video showing a signboard for “Suman Ornaments,” a shop located in Mohatsim Ganj, Prayagraj.
Further investigation connected this footage to celebrations following Indian cricket team victories in early March during the T20 World Cup. Multiple social media posts from March clearly show the same location during cricket celebrations, confirming the footage predates the recent assembly elections entirely.
The second clip, showing people celebrating with green flags, was sourced from an Instagram account with the username “storyofhasi.” In the original post, the video contained text reading “Result day in Malappuram” — a detail that was deliberately obscured in the viral version. The caption included hashtags mentioning “UDF,” referring to the United Democratic Front, the Congress-led coalition in Kerala.
The green flags shown in the video belong to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a key UDF ally that secured 22 of the 27 seats it contested in the recent elections. The IUML flag features a white crescent moon and star on a green background, which bears a superficial resemblance to Pakistan’s flag but is distinctly different.
Detailed analysis shows the flags lack the white vertical stripe present on Pakistan’s national flag, and the orientation of the crescent moon and star symbols differs significantly. Location verification confirmed the footage was indeed from Malappuram, Kerala, where IUML candidate P.K. Kunhalikutty won the assembly seat.
The misleading video emerges amid heightened political tensions following the Election Commission’s announcement of results from the Kerala and West Bengal assembly elections. In Kerala, the Indian National Congress emerged as the single largest party with 63 constituencies, while the BJP achieved a historic victory in West Bengal with 207 seats.
This instance of misinformation represents a concerning trend of manipulated media being used to foster communal divisions following electoral outcomes. Digital literacy experts have warned that such misleading content tends to spike during politically sensitive periods, often exploiting existing social tensions.
Social media platforms continue to struggle with the rapid spread of such content despite stated commitments to combating election-related misinformation. The incident underscores the importance of critical media consumption and fact-checking, particularly during politically charged moments when misleading narratives can have real-world consequences.
As digital media becomes increasingly central to political discourse, the challenge of distinguishing authentic from manipulated content remains a pressing concern for voters, platforms, and democratic institutions alike.
