Fabricated Indian Connection in White House Shooting Attempt Debunked

Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old American man accused of firing gunshots outside the White House Correspondents’ dinner on April 25, has become the subject of an elaborate disinformation campaign originating from Pakistan-linked social media accounts.

As U.S. law enforcement investigates the incident that occurred near the high-profile event attended by President Donald Trump, multiple accounts on X (formerly Twitter) have been spreading unfounded conspiracy theories attempting to link Allen to India.

At the center of this misinformation effort is an account called Khorasan Ghag, which describes itself as a “journalist-run platform focused on militancy, terrorism, and counterterrorism” and lists its location as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The account has pushed a fabricated narrative claiming that “Indian Extremist Ideology” radicalized Allen.

According to these false claims, Allen was allegedly motivated by anger over U.S. immigration policies that supposedly delayed citizenship for his purported Indian wife, identified in the posts as “Priyanka Rao.” The accounts further alleged that Rao’s association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a prominent Hindu nationalist organization in India, contributed to Allen’s “transformation into extremism.”

Fact-checking by India Today has conclusively determined that these claims are entirely fabricated. The widely shared image allegedly showing Allen with his “Indian wife” is actually an AI-generated fake, as confirmed by multiple AI-detection tools including Hive Moderation and ZeroGPT, which identified the image as synthetic with confidence levels of 99.9% and 97% respectively.

The purported Indian passport of “Priyanka Rao” is similarly fraudulent, containing numerous glaring errors. The document features gibberish Hindi text interspersed with Bengali characters. More tellingly, the nationality field incorrectly displays “Cole Thomas Allen” instead of “India,” and the spouse’s name on Priyanka Rao’s passport is listed as “Priyanka Rao.” Google DeepMind’s SynthID detector confirmed the passport was generated using Google Gemini AI.

Contrary to these fabricated claims, no credible reports have indicated that Allen is married at all, let alone to an Indian woman. According to his LinkedIn profile, Allen is a mechanical engineer and computer scientist by education who has worked as an independent game developer and part-time teacher at C2 Education, a tutoring service for high school students, where he received a “teacher of the month” award in December 2024.

What is known about Allen’s actual motivations comes from a reported 1,000-word manifesto he sent to his family before the incident. According to The New York Times, Allen wrote: “I am no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes,” adding, “Well, to be completely honest, I was no longer willing a long time ago, but this is the first real opportunity I’ve had to do something about it.”

The manifesto allegedly outlined his “rules of engagement” and included references to Christian behavior. Notably, it contained no mentions of India, immigration issues, or any spouse, directly contradicting the narrative pushed by the Pakistan-linked accounts.

Allen’s manifesto also reportedly expressed surprise at the security lapses he encountered, writing: “Like, this level of incompetence is insane, and I very sincerely hope it’s corrected by the time this country gets actually competent leadership again. Like, if I was an Iranian agent, instead of an American citizen, I could have brought a damn Ma Deuce (M2 machine gun) in here and no one would have noticed shit. Actually insane.”

This episode highlights the growing challenge of cross-border disinformation campaigns that exploit breaking news events to further geopolitical narratives. The rapid spread of these AI-generated images and false claims demonstrates how easily synthetic media can be deployed to create convincing but entirely fictional connections between individuals and foreign countries.

As investigations into Allen’s background and motivations continue, this case serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying information through multiple credible sources, particularly during developing news situations when facts may be limited and the information landscape is vulnerable to manipulation.

    • Agreed. It’s worrying to see how easily false claims can gain traction online, even for serious matters like a White House security incident. Separating truth from fiction is increasingly challenging but essential.

  4. The use of fabricated stories about an Indian connection to try to muddy the waters around this incident is concerning. I’m glad to see the disinformation commission taking the time to thoroughly debunk these claims based on the available facts.

Interesting to see this debunking of the fabricated Indian connection claims around the White House shooting incident. Good to have the facts straight on what really happened and the lack of any credible evidence about an Indian wife or extremist ties.

Agree, it’s important to cut through the disinformation and focus on the actual details of the case as investigated by authorities. Spreading unsubstantiated rumors often does more harm than good.
