In a recent development, social media platforms have been circulating a photograph allegedly showing Donald Trump grabbing then-President Bill Clinton’s private areas at the 2000 U.S. Open tennis tournament. The image gained renewed attention following the release of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein by the U.S. House Oversight Committee.

The photograph, which shows the two men laughing together at the sporting event, has prompted numerous inquiries about its authenticity and the nature of the interaction captured. Upon investigation, fact-checkers have determined that while the photograph itself is genuine, the characterization of what it depicts is misleading.

The original image, available through Reuters and Wikimedia Commons, comes from the Clinton Presidential Library archives. Its official caption describes the scene simply as “Donald Trump laughs with then U.S. President Bill Clinton at the U.S. Open in Flushing, New York, U.S. in this September 8, 2000 handout photo.”

Further examination reveals that the moment captured shows Trump with one arm appearing to be behind Clinton, while his other hand is in motion in front of Clinton. However, contrary to online claims, Trump’s hand is hovering in space and not making contact with Clinton’s body. The photograph represents one frame from what appears to be a friendly interaction between the two men at a public event.

Other photographs from the same gathering show the two men shaking hands and standing alongside Trump’s future wife, Melania, in a crowded, public setting. Model Kylie Bax, who was also present, later confirmed to Politico that the occasion was cordial, noting, “I actually think Bill was in another box and he came by to say hello to Donald… Donald was always a good host and close friend.”

The Clinton Presidential Library released this image and others from the event in September 2016 in response to a Freedom of Information Act request from Politico. The news organization’s coverage of the photographs described them as reflecting “a jovial mood” with Clinton “smiling broadly as the real estate mogul seemed to be cracking jokes.”

Former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, a close Clinton associate, can also be spotted in the background of one of the photographs from that day, further contextualizing the public nature of the gathering.

The mischaracterization of the photograph coincides with the circulation of information about individuals mentioned in Epstein’s emails. One particular email that has drawn attention involved Jeffrey Epstein’s brother Mark suggesting he ask former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon “if Putin has the photos of Trump blowing Bubba,” a reference to oral sex. This sparked speculation about “Bubba” potentially being Clinton, though Mark Epstein later issued a statement explicitly denying this: “The reference to ‘Bubba’ in this correspondence is not, in any way, a reference to former President Bill Clinton.”

The relationship between Clinton and Trump in 2000 appears to have been cordial, if not friendly. Earlier that same year, Clinton attended a Democratic fundraiser for Representative Ed Towns at Trump Tower. Towns later recalled in a 2016 interview that Trump monopolized Clinton’s time at the event, stating, “Donald had him in the corner and tied him up. I’ll never forget that moment.”

This incident highlights the ongoing scrutiny of historical interactions between public figures, particularly in the context of the Epstein case, which has prompted numerous reexaminations of past relationships and events involving high-profile individuals.
