Social media posts falsely claiming a video shows armed officers thwarting a terror attack at a British shopping center have been debunked by police as a routine response to a parking dispute.
The footage, which garnered over 560,000 views on X (formerly Twitter), shows armed police officers in a car park with one officer detaining a man on the ground. It was shared with captions suggesting authorities had prevented a “potential terror attack at Gateshead Metrocentre over the Christmas weekend.”
Northumbria Police swiftly corrected the misinformation, explaining in an official statement that the incident occurred on December 27 in the yellow multi-storey car park at the Metrocentre shopping complex near Newcastle.
“We were alerted to a disturbance where the occupants of two cars had been involved in a verbal dispute about a parking space,” the police statement read. “It was reported that one of the males was thought to be carrying a suspected firearm.”
The police deployed armed officers as a precautionary measure, resulting in the arrest of five males aged 17, 18, 20, 21, and 23 on suspicion of possessing a firearm. However, the police spokesperson confirmed via email that no weapons were found at the scene, and the five individuals were subsequently released on bail pending further investigation.
“This is being treated as an isolated incident, and there is no wider risk to the public,” Northumbria Police emphasized in their statement, explicitly confirming they are not treating it as a terror-related incident.
The Metrocentre, one of Britain’s largest shopping complexes, also addressed the rumors directly on social media, confirming that the incident related solely to a parking dispute.
This case illustrates the speed at which misinformation can spread on social media platforms, particularly when dramatic footage of armed police response is involved. The miscaptioned video gained significant traction despite the absence of any credible media reports of a foiled terror attack.
Several reputable news outlets, including the BBC, the Northern Echo, and the Newcastle Chronicle, accurately reported the incident as a parking dispute that prompted an armed police response due to concerns about a possible firearm.
The viral spread of the miscaptioned video comes amid heightened security concerns across Europe during the holiday season, potentially contributing to the video’s rapid circulation. Law enforcement agencies frequently face challenges in correcting public misinformation that spreads faster than official statements.
False claims about terrorism can cause unnecessary public alarm and divert attention from legitimate security concerns. They can also stigmatize individuals involved in minor incidents by wrongfully associating them with terrorism.
Fact-checking organizations and police forces increasingly find themselves needing to respond rapidly to such misinformation. The Reuters Fact Check team, which investigated this incident, routinely monitors and debunks false claims circulating on social media as part of their broader fact-checking work.
The incident serves as a reminder for social media users to verify information through official channels before sharing potentially misleading content, especially when it relates to matters of public safety and security.
