In a concerning case of digital misinformation, a fabricated video purporting to show a large anti-government demonstration in Birmingham has gained substantial traction on social media platforms before being exposed as an AI-generated fake.
The video, which accumulated more than 6,800 likes on Facebook before its removal, depicted an aerial view of what appeared to be hundreds of protesters gathered near the Library of Birmingham, carrying Union flags and banners. The post claimed, “More than 500 people have gathered in Birmingham to protest against the government, with demonstrators holding flags and banners as the situation continues to develop.”
Upon investigation by Full Fact, the UK’s largest fact-checking organization, the footage was determined to be entirely artificial. Telltale signs of AI generation included the presence of SynthID, an invisible watermark embedded in content created or modified using Google’s artificial intelligence tools.
Beyond the watermark, numerous visual anomalies revealed the video’s fraudulent nature. Vehicles appeared to move backward, protest signs contained nonsensical text, and crowds displayed unnatural glitching and blurring effects. The geographical layout also failed to accurately represent Centenary Square, the purported location of the demonstration.
West Midlands Police confirmed to fact-checkers that no such protest had occurred in the area during the timeframe suggested by the social media posts.
In a separate incident of digital deception, misleading claims have circulated widely about Rotherham’s mayor allegedly calling for Sharia law and the deportation of non-Muslim UK citizens. The false narrative spread across X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, featuring a short clip of Councillor Rukhsana Ismail speaking in Arabic.
The posts falsely claimed that the mayor was demanding “the expulsion of all Non Muslims,” when in reality, the video showed Ismail delivering a traditional Ramadan greeting. Full Fact traced the footage to a longer video posted on the councillor’s official Instagram account on February 18, where she begins with “Ramadan Kareem” in Arabic—meaning “generous Ramadan”—followed by a blessing.
After the Arabic greeting, Ismail continues in English to discuss the significance of Ramadan, describing it as a time of “reflection, compassion and generosity.” At no point does she mention Sharia law or make any statements against non-Muslims, contradicting the inflammatory claims attached to the shortened clip.
This year’s Ramadan began on February 18 in some parts of the world and February 19 in the UK, providing context for the timing of the mayor’s message.
These incidents highlight the growing challenge of synthetic media and manipulated content on social platforms. As AI tools become more accessible, the creation of convincing fake footage has become increasingly common, requiring greater vigilance from the public when consuming information online.
Full Fact emphasizes the importance of verifying sources and questioning viral content before sharing. Digital literacy experts recommend examining videos for inconsistencies and checking whether trusted news organizations have reported on the alleged events.
The rapid spread of these fabricated narratives demonstrates the potential for AI-generated content to mislead the public on matters of social and political significance, underscoring the need for enhanced digital literacy and robust fact-checking systems.
