In a political landscape increasingly clouded by misinformation, a video claiming to show a clandestine meeting between Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has been proven false after circulating widely on social media platforms.

The video, which shows the two politicians meeting briefly at an airport runway, was shared with claims that Union Minister Amit Shah had assigned Naidu the task of orchestrating the downfall of Karnataka’s Congress government by “poaching” Shivakumar amid an alleged power struggle within the state’s leadership.

“Khela Hobe,” wrote one social media user, metaphorically suggesting the imminent collapse of Karnataka’s Congress government. “Amit Shah ji has assigned Naidu Sahab his duty. Now Karnataka is gone too.” Another post claimed, “DK Shivakumar will be in NDA soon. All Hail @ncbn. We will be having CBN-friendly governments all around us soon.”

Fact-checking organization NewsMeter has debunked these claims, confirming that the video is not recent but dates back to December 2023. Through reverse image searches of keyframes from the video, investigators found the footage published by multiple news outlets, including Live Hindustan and NewsTap, in late December 2023.

According to these reports, the meeting was coincidental. Naidu was at the airport after attending a Telugu Desam Party event in Bengaluru and was heading back to his constituency in Kuppam. Shivakumar, meanwhile, was traveling to Nagpur to participate in Congress Foundation Day celebrations.

The misleading claims emerge against the backdrop of reported tensions between Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy Shivakumar. The Congress government in Karnataka recently crossed its halfway mark, fueling speculation about leadership changes, with both politicians allegedly eyeing the chief minister’s position.

Political analysts note that such misinformation often intensifies during periods of perceived vulnerability within ruling coalitions. The false narrative around Naidu’s involvement appears designed to exploit and amplify rumors of discord within Karnataka’s Congress leadership.

On November 29, in an apparent show of unity, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar had breakfast together and publicly pledged to respect whatever decision comes from the party’s national leadership. Shivakumar himself has emphasized that he has “no differences of opinion” with Siddaramaiah and that as the state party president, he would work collaboratively with all colleagues.

While the political dynamics between the two Congress leaders continue to attract attention, there are no credible reports suggesting Naidu has been tasked with interfering in Karnataka’s politics or attempting to poach Shivakumar for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

This incident highlights the growing challenge of digital misinformation in India’s political discourse, where old videos are frequently repurposed with new, misleading narratives to create political controversies. As political tensions rise in various states, fact-checkers and media organizations face an increasingly difficult task of separating authentic news from manipulated content designed to influence public opinion.

The spread of such misinformation underscores the importance of digital literacy and the need for viewers to critically evaluate political content shared on social media platforms, particularly during periods of political uncertainty.
