Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan was the subject of widespread death rumors recently, fueled by a photo circulating on social media showing him lying down. The image, shared alongside claims of his assassination in prison, sparked concern among supporters but has since been verified as misleading.

An investigation by Vishvas News revealed the viral image dates back to August 17, 2014, when Khan himself posted it on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. The decade-old photo showed him resting during a political protest, not a recent incident as suggested by current social media posts.

The photo resurfaced amid growing tension surrounding Khan’s detention in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, where he has been imprisoned since 2023. Recent incidents have intensified speculation about his well-being. According to Navbharat Times, Khan’s sisters—Noreen, Aleema, and Uzma Khan—were allegedly mistreated and removed from the prison when they attempted to visit him on November 25, 2025.

This incident prompted a significant demonstration outside Adiala Jail, with PTI supporters gathering to demand information about their leader’s condition. The protesters expressed concerns about potential mistreatment and called for transparency from authorities regarding Khan’s health status.

Pakistani officials have firmly denied rumors of Khan’s death. The Adiala Jail administration issued a statement describing such claims as “baseless” and assured the public that the former prime minister remains in good health. However, the lack of direct access to Khan has continued to fuel speculation.

Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), responded to the swirling rumors through an official statement on November 27. The party urged the Pakistani government to allow family members to meet with Khan in person to verify his condition and dispel the ongoing speculation about his health.

“Certain platforms in Afghanistan and Indian media, as well as some foreign social media accounts, are spreading disturbing and malicious rumors,” the PTI stated, calling for immediate clarification from authorities.

The circulation of misleading information regarding Khan appears to be part of a broader pattern of misinformation surrounding the controversial political figure. Pakistani journalist Farwa Waheed confirmed to investigators that the viral image being shared is indeed an old photograph unrelated to current events.

The false claims about Khan’s assassination gained significant traction online, with one Facebook post by a user named “Pari Patel” accumulating substantial engagement. The post falsely claimed: “Big Big Breaking News…Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan…has been murdered in jail by the Pak Army.”

While the viral photo and assassination claims have been debunked, the incident highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding Khan’s imprisonment and the polarized political landscape in Pakistan. The former cricket star turned politician has remained a divisive figure since his removal from office, with his supporters continuing to rally behind him despite his detention.

As misinformation continues to spread, media organizations and fact-checking groups emphasize the importance of verifying information before sharing potentially inflammatory content, particularly regarding high-profile political figures in volatile situations.
