Bangladesh’s information minister called for international collaboration to combat the growing threat of weaponized misinformation during a high-profile communication summit in Turkey, emphasizing the need for states to protect citizens from harmful disinformation campaigns.

In an interview with Turkish news outlet Yeni Şafak, Bangladesh’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Zahir Uddin Swapon, described the Strategic Communication Summit 2026 in Istanbul as a crucial platform for addressing what has become an urgent global challenge.

“Misinformation is increasingly being weaponized across the world, and it’s often ordinary citizens who suffer the consequences,” Swapon said. He emphasized that governments have a fundamental responsibility to ensure their populations have access to accurate information while being protected from deliberate disinformation.

The minister’s comments come at a time when digital misinformation has evolved from a minor nuisance to a sophisticated tool used by various actors to influence public opinion, disrupt democratic processes, and even incite violence. Bangladesh, like many developing nations, has faced significant challenges with viral misinformation spreading through social media platforms, particularly during times of political tension or national crisis.

The Strategic Communication Summit in Istanbul has attracted communication officials and media experts from across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Turkey’s position as host underscores its growing influence in international media affairs and its strategic location bridging multiple regions.

According to communication experts, cross-border disinformation campaigns have become increasingly sophisticated, often using artificial intelligence and targeted messaging to exploit societal divisions. These campaigns can originate from both state and non-state actors, making the threat particularly complex to address.

Swapon highlighted that no single country can effectively combat disinformation alone. “This is not a challenge any nation can solve in isolation,” he noted. “What happens in one country’s information space now rapidly affects others. We need coordinated regional and global efforts.”

The minister suggested that the Turkish-hosted summit could serve as a catalyst for developing more robust international frameworks for identifying, tracking, and counteracting disinformation campaigns. Such collaboration could potentially include shared monitoring systems, harmonized regulatory approaches, and joint educational initiatives to improve media literacy.

Bangladesh has implemented several domestic measures to combat misinformation in recent years, including stricter digital security laws and public awareness campaigns. However, these efforts have sometimes drawn criticism from press freedom advocates who worry about potential restrictions on legitimate journalism.

Media policy experts note that finding the balance between combating harmful misinformation while protecting free speech remains one of the most challenging aspects of information governance in the digital age. This challenge is particularly acute in South Asia, where rapidly growing internet access has not always been accompanied by corresponding growth in digital literacy.

The Istanbul summit represents one of several recent international efforts to address digital misinformation. Similar initiatives have been launched by the United Nations, the European Union, and various regional organizations, reflecting growing global consensus about the seriousness of the threat.

As social media platforms continue to evolve and new technologies like deepfakes become more accessible, the international community faces mounting pressure to develop more effective approaches to ensuring information integrity while respecting fundamental freedoms.

Swapon’s participation in the summit signals Bangladesh’s interest in playing a more active role in these international discussions, potentially strengthening the country’s ties with Turkey and other participating nations while addressing a shared challenge that transcends borders.
