In a striking example of media failure, CBS affiliate WDBJ7 has come under fire for allowing Republican Congressman Ben Cline to spread misinformation about Virginia’s redistricting process without challenge during a recent interview.

The controversy, initially highlighted by Chris Graham of the Augusta Free Press, centers on Cline’s false characterization of proposed changes to Virginia’s 6th Congressional District, which he currently represents.

During the interview, Cline claimed that Democrats were attempting to “chop the district” and “parcel it out to so many Northern Virginia seats” through what he called an “unconstitutional gerrymander.” However, maps of the proposed redistricting clearly show that the new 6th District would not extend into Northern Virginia at all.

The district would instead include areas like Albemarle County, Harrisonburg, Roanoke, Montgomery County, Charlottesville, and Lynchburg—regions that by no definition constitute Northern Virginia. Despite WDBJ7 acknowledging elsewhere in the segment that the new district would encompass “Radford, Virginia Tech, UVA, JMU, along with the cities of Roanoke and Salem,” the station’s interviewer failed to correct Cline’s misrepresentation.

Media critics point to this exchange as emblematic of broader problems in political journalism. Rather than challenging Cline’s claims, WDBJ7 simply relayed his opinions that “the redistricting process ignored Virginia’s constitution and the question on the ballot was meant to confuse voters.” The station offered no fact-checking or context to help viewers understand the accuracy of these assertions.

The segment further drew criticism for its framing of nationwide redistricting efforts. WDBJ7 described the Supreme Court’s recent decision weakening the Voting Rights Act merely as having “scaled back” protections, without explaining how the ruling particularly impacts minority voting rights or addressing the partisan implications.

Critics argue this represents a form of false equivalence that fails to inform viewers about the full context of redistricting battles occurring across the country. This “both sides” approach to reporting complex political issues has become increasingly controversial among media watchdogs.

The interview concluded with what observers characterized as a softball question about Republicans’ chances of maintaining control of the House in November. Predictably, Cline expressed confidence, highlighting Republican legislation on border security. Again, the station offered no substantive follow-up or context regarding the political gridlock that has surrounded such legislation.

What makes the journalistic failure particularly notable is that if the Virginia Supreme Court upholds the redistricting referendum—a decision expected soon—Cline could face significant electoral challenges in the newly drawn district. This crucial context was omitted from the segment.

The station’s approach has raised questions about potential conflicts of interest, with critics pointing out that WDBJ7’s chairman, Hilton Howell Jr., is reportedly a Republican donor.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the state of political journalism in America, particularly regarding how media outlets balance access to political figures with their responsibility to provide accurate information to the public. Media critics argue that journalists must prioritize truth-telling and factual context over simply providing platforms for politicians to make unchallenged claims.

As redistricting continues to reshape electoral landscapes nationwide, the quality and integrity of media coverage will play a crucial role in whether voters receive the accurate information needed to participate meaningfully in the democratic process.
