Turkey’s Erdogan Intensifies Criticism of Israel as Regional Tensions Escalate

A viral video claiming Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened to attack Israel has been debunked as disinformation, according to a recent Dailymotion explainer. The video, which suggested Erdogan would launch military action if Pakistan failed to broker peace between the US and Iran, was revealed to be misleadingly edited footage from a speech in which Erdogan was actually condemning Israeli strikes in Lebanon.

Despite the false claim about invasion threats, tensions between Turkey and Israel continue to escalate. On April 12, Turkey’s foreign ministry formally described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the “Hitler of our time,” adding to a growing list of inflammatory rhetoric from Erdogan’s administration.

The Turkish president has repeatedly used harsh language toward Netanyahu, previously labeling him a “psychopath,” “maniac,” and “vampire.” This week, Erdogan described the Israeli leader as “blinded by blood and hate” amid ongoing anger over Israel’s military operations in Gaza and Syria.

In a significant escalation, Turkish prosecutors have filed indictments against 35 top Israeli officials, including Netanyahu, seeking over 4,500 years in prison collectively. The charges include crimes against humanity, genocide, torture, and unlawful deprivation of liberty, according to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency.

Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek called the indictment “historic,” signaling Turkey’s determination to pursue legal action against Israeli leadership through its domestic courts.

The Israeli response was swift and equally harsh. Netanyahu countered by accusing Erdogan of massacring Kurdish citizens and “accommodating Iran’s terror regime and its proxies.” Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz added fuel to the fire, advising Erdogan to “sit quietly and shut up,” while referencing a July 2024 incident when he warned Erdogan to “recall what happened to Saddam Hussein.”

Some analysts point to an apparent contradiction in Erdogan’s position, noting his silence on U.S. President Donald Trump’s role in the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran. Critics suggest Erdogan has focused exclusively on Israel’s actions while giving Trump “a free pass,” potentially reflecting Turkey’s complex relationship with Washington.

Turkey has been characterized by some observers as a U.S. proxy in the region. IntelliNews reported last October that Turkey, along with Egypt and Qatar, helped facilitate Hamas’s surrender and would assist in rebuilding Gaza, potentially in a project dubbed “Trump town” by critics.

The growing animosity between Turkey and Israel reflects their competing regional ambitions. Both nations seek pivotal roles across the Middle East, with Syria representing a particular flashpoint where they support rival factions.

Following the December 2024 fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime—precipitated by an offensive from Turkey-backed militias—Israel reportedly bombed Syrian airfields that Turkey had considered establishing as military bases. While direct military confrontation between the two countries has been avoided so far, their proxies continue to clash in the region.

The deteriorating relationship between these two historically allied non-Arab powers in the Middle East represents a significant shift in regional dynamics. As both countries pursue their strategic interests, the inflammatory rhetoric and legal maneuvers signal a deepening divide that could further complicate peace efforts across the region.

As regional powers jockey for position and influence, the war of words between Erdogan and Netanyahu highlights how personal animosities between leaders can exacerbate already volatile international relationships in one of the world’s most unstable regions.
